Roger Sanchez Interview

To coincide with a new album, and a role in a new film, we bring you a very special interview with the one and only Roger Sanchez.

1. How do you feel about being asked to do a Choice album?

It was great to be able to do an album on my musical roots. I feel honored to have been asked and it has been an a pleasure putting it together. I am at a point now that I can look back on how the dance scene has grown and put the development of my career right next to it. It’s nice to go back and underline what started it all.

2. Just how difficult was it to make your final section? And what process of elimination did you use?

It was difficult because I couldn’t fit everything I wanted in and it is a difficult process finding some of the old ‘diamonds’, but in the end we got pretty much everything that I felt was really important and then the trax I chose were what inspired the sound I have become known for.

3. How has your upbringing in Queens, New York and your Dominican heritage influenced the selection on this Choice album?

Definitely, some of it is very breakdance – something I used to dabble with as a kid – and some really latin influenced so that comes from my growing up days.

4. Did your parents introduce you to a lot of the funk and disco that is on CD1? And is CD2 more of a refection of music you discovered yourself when you was starting out?

CD 1 was what my parents and friends introduced me to musically and CD 2 reflects the sound on records I came across digging through the records at the record shops and what was big at the clubs at the time.

5. You have 6 re-edits on the Choice album, how did you go about picking what ones to remix?

The Loose Joints one was obvious because of my record Luv Dancin. The other were trax that I’ve always wanted a more playable version but never had one.

6. You have remixed many artists spanning such genres as r&B, pop, dance, and more. Is there a particular style of music that you prefer working on?

To be honest with you I love it all but soulful songs are my favourite – I would probably pay to be able to do a Sade remix ;-)

7. What sort of music are you listening to of late?

Everything from Hip Hop, Chill Out to Rock and electronic indie bands – I have liked Cee-Lo from before his Gnarls Barkley days, Sade, Common, Lily Allen, Badly Drawn Boys and the Killers….all that!

8. Can you tell us more about your music being included in some recent art-house movies?

Turn on the Music is used throughout the Spanish movie Yo Soy La Juani by famous director Bigas Luna (he is known for arthouse movies like Jamon Jamon, Las Edades de Luna and Bilbao. Also I am writing music for a film that is to start production called Johnny Postal and will have people starring like Nick Torturro, Frankie Faison en even a small role for me.

9. Tell us the latest goings on with your record label Stealth…

The label has just been doing so well – we are already working on our 40th single release, my artist album Come With Me is in full swing everywhere and the new CD series Afterdark is doing really well and then we are working towards the new Release Yourself volume. We are doing more and more events and so yeah very happy how it is all going.

10. Aside from releasing your Choice album for Azuli, what’s next for Roger Sanchez?

I am writing songs for a couple of artists working on ideas for some collaborations and working on the music for the film.

11. You also produce your own podcast’s – how do you make them and how often do you do them?

I have a great team of producers and editors that works with me for the radioshow and they produce the podcasts as well. At the moment the podcasts go out every 2 weeks and the numbers of people that subscribe to them have exceeded our expectations – we expect to surpass the 500.000 stream in a couple of months – unbelievable!

12. What are you writing for the much hyped ‘Johnny Postal’ movie? Is it true that you are to feature in it too?

I have been asked to play a drug dealing pimp and I am working on a track to go with that character in some scenes and then I’ll do some more stuff for them once the scenes have been written out.

13. Finally, Where can we see you play in the coming months?

USA, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Australia, Columbia, Mexico, UK and the Netherlands for New Years Eve!

Roger Sanchez – Choice is due for release on the 29th of January, on Azuli. You can preorder your Mixed or Non-Mixed version now from Amazon.
