Since 1994 Chris Fortier’s Fade Records has been discovering new artists and releasing glorious dance music. Continually pushing the boundaries, it is now time for the first major restrospective compilation of the finest moments so far. Compiled and mixed by Royal Sapien & 40oz (Chris Fortier) this is a superb reminder of exactly how much great music can come from one man’s boundless enthusiasm.

“I started this label from pure necessity. Necessity for my own releases really. I didn’t have grand illusions to have some big record label to make money or use the label as a promo tool that is so common today. I just wanted my music out on vinyl and I really didn’t know any other way than to do it myself.

As my own music gained visibility and we were picked up by a larger label, FADE was put on the back burner until a UK DJ tour led me to stumble on a record that I seemed to hammer the grooves out of which put the idea in my head to get involved with it and the artists. The fascination of being a part of another artist’s career growth, beyond playing their records in clubs, grew and grew. I began to really keep my ear out there for fresh sounds that I felt were unique and inspiring to me.
Enter Steve Porter. I happened upon him from a gig I was playing near his hometown. He sent me some of his tracks in a DJ mix. I was immediately drawn to them. And then when I found out more about him, I was further blown away. Barely 18 years old and weaving intricate energies with ease. Steve was probably the biggest catalyst for me to jump back full stop with the label and focusing solely on other artists. Each week on the road being handed CDR’s from young artists, I was a kid in the candy shop. I was picking up new tracks left, right and centre. Soon I had full release schedules beyond 12 months. I soon began to see a pattern developing with the artists and tracks I was selecting. Every track, every release was turning out to be the very first production or creation from these guys. That to me seemed to say a lot. I really enjoyed being on the cusp of their start and being a positive force to help them achieve something more in their music or career.

The label has never been about money or any kind of financial angle. I have never signed a track because I thought it would be popular or sell a lot. I take tracks that I believed in and would be happy regardless of any sales at all. Simple and sincerely, the label has been a creative outlet for me. One to allow me to be involved on more levels in the music I am passionate about, in all its forms.

Eventually, a sister label was born called FDS Recordings, with the same passion, same agenda of just good music.

Steve Porter, Pat Foosheen, Tone Depth, JV, Ben Camp, Morris & Shylock, Blackwatch, Chris Micali, Micah. Scott McFadyen, Derek Howell & Funk Harmony Park. For me, this is the most gratifying part of what the label has achieved. Meeting these guys early on and being able to give some insight to help them go further with their sound.

The Audio Tour album is due for release in May 2007 and is sure to be a good one
