KOS Interview

Tell us about your involvement the one+one project. How did you get picked to be the warm up DJ?
Kos: I have been great friends with James Zabiela for 11 years and with Nic Fanciulli for about 2 years. We all get on so well and they have always said to me that if the situation arose where they could help me to boost my DJ profile further then they would help me out. Then the One+One idea was created I got the call from the management saying that I was about to travel the world with JZ and Nic, warming up for them at every gig and looking after them as well, as they know that I am super-organised ! I remember jumping up and down on my bed for about an hour !

In your opinion what makes a good warm up DJ?
Kos: The warm-up is the most difficult set of the night. This sets the whole night up and if you go too hard too soon it can ruin things for the DJ playing later. I always consider the style of the DJ after me and i build the night up so that it is ready to take off when the guest DJ starts. There are a few different factors which depend on how I warm-up – depending on what time I am playing until, the size of the club etc. Luckily I am always with JZ & Nic so they can tell me even which track they want to start with so I can set it up for that. I have even made a few tracks myself to play before them. Sometimes they like to start their set with their track ‘Rover’ so I have made a track called ‘Radiate’ which sits perfectly before it.

What is the next step for you once the tour is over? Will you be in Ibiza much for the summer?
Kos: Once the tour is over it will be sad for all of us, as touring with 2 friends is much more fun that touring solo ! But hopefully when it is the end I would have impressed enough new promoters to add to the clubs where I already play as a guest DJ and my diary can be almost as full as Nic & James ! That is the plan ! There are lots of One+One dates in ibiza at We Love Space and also one at Made In Italy @ Amnesia.

How are your productions coming along? What is your latest release info?
Kos: I have just finished 2 collaborations with Sam Ball called “Saccharine” and “Kaiser” which are to be released on Definitive Recordings at the end of May. I loved working with Sam – we have different styles but we were really pleased with the end product. Also I just remixed my own track ‘Karalis’ which is coming out on on Saved Records in June, and new tracks ‘Sleeping Giant’, ‘Radiate’, ‘King Of Sleaze” & ‘Citrus Acid’ to follow. I made as many tracks as I could before the tour started because now there is no time to even sleep!

Where are you based? or like most Djs are you a citizen of the world!?
Kos: Haha well i feel like a gypsy these days but my home has been in Barcelona for the last year which I have loved, but now I am based back in London for a while as my studio is there. I prefer Barcelona – it was so chilled out there, but for now London is where I need to be.

Is it true you are making an artist album already? If so, do you think that’s quite an ambitious step or do you feel its the right time for you?
Kos: Yes i am writing tracks for an album now. It probably is a bit ambitious step but I look at people like Mylo and Calvin Harris who made albums from the start and their careers went crazy after that. Even if it does not sell so many copies I don’t mind as long as it gets good reviews and the music industry take notice.

The most popular artists all seem to have quirks unique to them – what’s yours? And do you think these are true or just clever yarns spun by PRs?
Kos: Haha no i dont think there are any clever things made up about me ! I guess the more i get known, people will form their own ideas about me – fingers crossed they will be good ! I wouldnt wanna be known as some womaniser or something like certain DJ’s i know !

Talking of PRs and the like do you think it is possible for an artist to be successful without a big team behind them such as a booking agent, manager, PR, big record label backing etc etc?
Kos: I guess I am lucky to have a great management team – Club Class, my PR Kim is a diamond and other good people around me which is a great bonus. However I think that quality music always shines through at the end and a successful artist will always break through if their music is good enough. It would probably take longer without the right people to help though.
