M.Y.N.C. Project are legendary for their four-decks/ two-mixer shows and innumerable effects units… fusing together their very different styles, tastes and supreme technical ability to produce a truly unique style where they take DJing beyond simply playing other people’s music.
For their new Sessions album Mark Brown and Nick Corelli have decided to go against the grain and deliver 2 individual mixes… “People won’t expect individual mixes but it’s great to throw in surprises from time to time.” says Nick. Mark says “We did it this way because we wanted to showcase our favourite music as individuals. We actually have very different tastes and it’s a fresh approach as people are used to us always doing the 4 deck 2 mixer thing.”
This 2 disc album gives Mark and Nick the unique opportunity to present what they each feel is essential listening. Featuring tracks from the likes of Kurd Maverick, Pryda, Magik Johnson and Dirty South.
CD1 is mixed by CR2 label boss Mark Brown and starts off with the mystical Beanfield ft Bajka `Tides’, with her quirky rich vocal that is simply divine. This track is playfully naughty and has a dark deviance to it. The foundations are now set for Mark’s ensuing smooth, very cool mix; leading on to the deeply hypnotic Phunklarique’s `Nameless’ which is uplifting in a subtle manner and melts into Argy’s `The Storm; a techy deep number – very DC10 and Space terrace.
CD1 then touches on the minimal with Piermont’s `Carbonat’, this introduces the next level in Mark’s mix which is much more acid-tinged and grittier. This is where the tempo changes to introduce more bleepy noises with Pryda’s `Rymd’. Taking on deeper, bigger bass-laden sounds we hear beauties from the likes of Jim Rivers and Dirty South & M.Y.N.C Project’s very own `Everybody Freakin’.
Mark’s tougher side shines through when he drops Dave Robertson’s `Solve it’ which seems to fit perfectly with Erick Morillo’s 1995 offering of Lil’ Mo’ Yang’s `Reach’. A real blast from the past! Then bringing in bleeping synths layered over lush piano and guitar riffs with CR2s Kurd Maverick’s `Strings of Tortuga’. Ending on Carl Kennedy vs M.Y.N.C Project which features the vocal talents of Roachford – `Ride the storm’ is a perfect end for Mark to hand over to his M.Y.N.C partner…
Now it’s Nick Corelli’s turn to introduce a more quirky house based sound before giving way to a darker, techier vibe and finishing off on the wave of an electronic groove. The opening track is the bouncy and moody `Fire’ by Jeff Samuel – this definitely sets the tone. Strange noises start whirling around with off-beat drums that are quite tribally. This leads on to some old-school techy vibes with Worthy’s `Bass Quake’. Nick’s love of obscure noises is very apparent throughout his mix, they creep into your mind and work their way down to your feet to get you dancing.
Brett Johnson & DJ Heather’s `Everything’s Electric’ is then layered over `Ghetto Train’ by Justin Martin for a very chuggy, energetic deep ride. It stops off at some deep house moments with persistent noodly noises that prepare you for some bass-heavy electro. Magik Johnson’s `Asylum Sneaker’ is a bottomless pit of sounds, while off-key notes wreak havoc. Pure acid crunching sounds resonate throughout the mix to lead on to Paolo Mojo’s techy beauty `JMJ’ which Nick teases you with.
Faze Action’s `In the trees’ is an ominous magnificent orchestral piece of house music that really gets you revved up as it’s underlying driving bassline is relentless. Nick then hits you with some full on electro acid bleeps with Partial Arts `Trauermusik’, highly charged it ends with ZZT `Lower state of consciousness’. You are left dazed and content with Nick’s mix.
Ministry of Sound’s legendary Sessions CD is a true testament to the current climate of cool; Sessions celebrates 10 years this year and it still very much has it’s finger on the pulse. The series began with the legendary Tony Humphries and has since invited the likes of Josh Wink, Fedde Le Grande, Sebastien Ingrosso and Axwell to name but a few. This illustrious compilation series is one that clubbers can rely on to deliver them the most upfront electronica of our time.
As well as their musical tastes, M.Y.N.C Projects backgrounds and current ventures could not be ore different… Mark Brown set up Credence (the dance imprint of EMI) in 2000 – signing massive acts such as Eric Prydz and Dirty Vegas (their album sold over 2 million copies world wide and was # 7 in the American Chart). He then moved on to set up CR2 which was voted label of the year (2007) by IDJ, obviously with an ear for hits, Mark has signed tracks such as `Put your Hands up for Detroit’ by Fedde le Grande, David Guetta vs The Egg and Danny Howell’s & Dick Trevor’s `Dusk til Dawn’ which all reached iconic status in the charts.
Nick Corelli has taken a different turn and opened Club Rapture in his hometown of Loughborough… The club has been transformed into a vibrant, exciting venue to showcase international renowned stars, as well as nurture new DJ talent. Nick’s aim is to offer a varied and diverse clubbing experience. Booking some of most upfront talent such as Shitdisco, Mistress da Funk, Evil 9, Paul Woolford and of course, M.Y.N.C Project.
So, expect lots more from the M.Y.N.C Project, as individuals and as partners with gigs, remixes for Kylie (Mark Brown), a venue that could change the face of clubbing culture in the midlands (Nick Corelli) and a massive deal in the pipeline involving music for a certain bank!
