The most in demand DJ in the UK is not a comment to be thrown around lightly but it’s true of Will Bailey whose popularity has seen him travel all over the place continuing to destroy every dancefloor he encounters. Currently enjoying high demand from promoters, record labels and Dj’s alike his production and gig schedule has gone totally crazy.
Over the past 5 months Will has made guest appearances on The Loose Cannons highly rated Kiss FM show, Andi Durrants peak time Galaxy FM show as well as delivering a host of hot mixes on Ministry of Sound radio and House FM.
His tracks from ‘Krusher’ to ‘Hookin’, ‘Chooper’ and ‘Gunman’ have all been given the Radio 1 seal of approval by Pete Tong, Eddie Halliwell and the Trophy Twins with a hot mix planned for Radio 1 in 2008.
After recently headlining Ministry of Sound for the second time to a packed club last month, Will has been pinned down for a few more dates at the UK’s No1 Superclub. The last few months have been hectic with Will taking in many of the countries top clubs including Turnmills, Mission, Sankey’s, Honey Club, SEone and Godskitchen as well as tearing up more intimate dancefloors in Lincoln, Cornwall, Sheffield, Leeds, Hull and his home town of Birmingham.The start of 2008 saw Mr Bailey embark on a 12 date tour of Australia, New Zealand and Asia with a second tour planned after the summer . The next few months sees Will travel to San Francisco and Shanghai with a return to Russia and many of Europe’s best clubs including a trip to the white isle for 3 very special gigs. In The UK Will joins the biggest Dj’s in the world at the massive Global Gathering in July while also fitting in his residencies at Sick! On The Dancefloor, Electroquisite and Filth in Leeds and you can see why he is the MOST IN DEMAND DJ IN THE UK.
For the people who’ve not yet heard of you, who are you and what is your mission?
Well first of all my mission is to make people have it on the dance floor and if I can do that with my own tracks that’s even better for me. I’m always trying to fuse different styles into my sound, garage, jungle, electro all rolled into one. I’ve always loved a good bass line. I’m making some more minimal and tech stuff at the moment too which keeps things interesting in the studio for me, as I am in the sometimes 7 days a week. I’m addicted to it.
What have you been up to so far this year?
Ive been working on a lot of original tracks in the studio on a more minimal tip, Ive also done a few more tracks with my good pal Digital filth, its been a while since Krusher was doin damage so we needed to catch up. Ive been playin a lot as always and of course been twockin it up with my main man Calvertron in the ‘Glitch Tank’
You’re also the owner of Simma Records, how long have these been running and what’s happening now?
Simma launched last year but this year I’ll be concentrating a lot more on the label. My ‘Stakker’ recently came out and forthcoming releases include mine and Mikey Hook’s Screwball Track which will come with a remix by one of my favourite producers Max Cooper. Also coming soon is the new one from myself and Digital Filth titled Traxx 2 which is on a new wave garage tip.
The clubbing scene in UK is going through a boom, what do you think the effect of this will be and is it sustainable?
I think the scene is looking good, there is always lots going on. I don’t see it changing and I hope it doesn’t. I think exciting djs like Micky Slim and Stupid Fresh have helped bring the scene to life.
You have just got back from a tour of OZ, What was that like and where did you go?
Yeh I toured for 3 weeks, went to New Zealand, Canberra and played with Aston Shuffle which rocked, played in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.
How do Austrailian crowds differ to their paler, European counterparts?
Well I had a great time out there so I cant complain, I thought the crowds out there were well up for it and definitely weren’t as pale!
Which other countries have you played and which has been the most exciting?
I had a very memorable gig in Vladimir, Russia. I played a 4 hour set and loved every second. The people were so into it and just wanted to dance. The Vodka was really good too so yeah it was a great trip. I would advise any DJ to get over there. Eindhoven in Holland was a great party too and the tour of Brazil I did was an amazin experience.
Are there any artists or DJs you’ve stumbled upon in your travels that the UK audience might not have heard of or should look out for?
I played in Italy with Blatta and Inesha, thought they rocked so hopefully they will be coming to the UK more. Id like to see Aston Shuffle here soon, they were havin it out on Australia, top guys.
What artists that are really exciting you at present and who do you expect to see big things from in 2008?
Well of course I’m going to big up my little bro here, Mikey Hook, 17 years old and producing his own tracks which is ace. Dave Carrington and Jay Lowe are set for big things. There are so many up and coming producers around at the moment, the production scene is really bubblin.
Your one half of production outfit Twocker, tell us a bit a bout that?
Twocker is Calvertron and myself. We hooked up last year and cam up with the Twocker thing around November. Things have gone really well, we’ve had support off the likes of Morillo, Fat Boy Slim, Pete Tong on Radio One. We’re remixing loads at the moment doing projects for Laidback Luke, Jelo, DJ Dan and labels such as Finger Lickin, CR2 and Ministry of Sound. We’ve recently headlined Ministry of Sound which was a wicked party. Onwards and upwards for the Twocker.
Finally, what do you have planned for 2008?
Well Id like to lose my gut, that’s my main goal, but after that Id like to progress as a producer and keep writing music that makes the people happy and keeps them dancing.
