UMEK – Destructible Environment EP Review

UMEKUmek has recently departed from his raw techno roots with a run of releases finding themselves on the tech house shelves of record haunts. This release is about as much of a return to those roots as we can probably expect during the current techno movement, 1605 have hit the top corner with this one.

The title track, Destructible Environment begins with the plonky rhythm that maintains the flow of the track throughout. The lead of this track sounds like a swarm of synths in some kind of dancefloor invasion and that’s exactly where this track is aimed. It’s a floor destroyer that on first listen with have you asking your mate – “what is this track?” As the swarm wavers the plonkiness returns to carry the track of to the finish. Pulling The Trigger provides more floor action with a rolling heavy bassline, sublime percs and some trippy horns and sweeps in the build.

The closing track is the most house orientated of the set, vocal effects are delayed and chopped to provide the groove along with some techy percs and rimshots. Where the others destroy the dancefloor, this gives it a subtle punch in the kidneys.

Overall the release is a solid one from Umek and it’s fantastic to see two classic umek’esque thumpers.

7/10.
