Sometimes sacred cows enjoy new pastures, and in this case, James Talk & Ridney’s reworking of ‘West End Girls’ comes with the blessing of its proud owners, the Pet Shop Boys (themselves no strangers to clubland).
A monumental slab of feel-good summer house, ‘West End girls (2009)’ is currently firing up dancefloors here and in Ibiza, and has just been made an Essential New Tune on Radio 1 by Pete Tong.
Instantly recognisable from the first few chords, ‘West End girls (2009)’ takes the original firmly onto today’s dancefloor, with enough electro flourishes to make it an anthem for a new generation.
The second in an occasional collaborative series, this track follows James and Ridney’s first joint production, ‘Sunshyne’, released last summer on CR2, also earmarked by Radio 1’s dance don, and named as Track Of The Year by Carl Cox.
Hailing from the South Coast city of Southampton, James and Ridney have both been cited as rising stars for their solo production and DJ careers. James has released underground smashes including ‘Cool Wet Grass’ with Audiofly (Get Physical), ‘Warm Milk’, ‘Pass Me The Suntan Lotion’ and ‘Remote’ (all on his own Spoken Recordings imprint) as well as remixing tracks for the likes of Renaissance, Bedrock and fabric, while DJ’s championing his productions include Pete Tong, Nic Fanciulli, Sasha, John Digweed, Danny Howells and Steve Lawler.
Ridney has collaborated with Lenny Fontana to produce ‘Wait 4 U’, rapidly signed as a single to Ministry Of Sound. His remix portfolio includes storming reworkings for labels such as Data and CR2 and he’s enjoyed regular support from heavyweight spinners including James Zabiela, Carl Cox, Pete Tong, and many more.
