Dandy, romantic, explorer and occasional shaman King Charles presents on his second single, the high octane psychedelic folk- pop-rock that comprises double A side ‘Love Lust’/ ‘Mr. Flick’ to be released on Mi7 records, on October 26th.
Following the release of debut single ‘Time Of Eternity’ and subsequent press, radio and online accolades, King Charles has marked himself out on record and on stage as a truly unique figure in the musical landscape that is 2009.
Charles and band have played storming gigs at the ‘BBC Introducing’ stage at Glastonbury (plus recorded a live session for Huw Stephens’ show at Maida Vale). They’ve also wowed crowds at Field Day and the Shoreditch 1234 festival, both of which saw Charles’ daring and wild side truly let loose.
Skewed romantic ode ‘Love Lust’ is a lo-fi big sound, which achieves anthemic status without polish, exploding after a long intro and taking in Charles emerging trademark for making twists and turns, whilst never losing sight of the pop target.
The war cry of ‘Mr. Flick’ ups the pressure further adding raunch-rock power to proceedings, melding Survivor and The Stones to ancient shanties, synth whirls, rapping and operatics, forming a mental but highly enjoyable whole.
To summarise, the Americans seem to have put their finger on the singular genius of Charles, as the following quote from The Fader states:
“King Charles of London tramples over the border of cool/not cool to create a new dominion reserved for people whose hair looks like Nyabhingi-styles Katherine Hepburn yet make epically shredding rock & roll. We remain perplexed by his dreaded beehive, pirate shirts, black wifebeaters and waxed moustache, but we’re still not letting our aesthetic confusion get in the way of how good this song is.â€
