At the closing party of We Love, Space, Ibiza 2008, Buzzin’ Fly’s head honcho Ben Watt shared the terrace stage with Gigolo’s DJ Hell. In spite of being born in the same year back in the early sixties, it occurred to Ben how different their long trajectories had been through music in the interim, and yet there they were rocking the same crowd from the same stage. Not only that but Hell dropped an hour of the most gorgeous deep house before turning on the electro fireworks.
When Hell subsequently worked extensively with jazz-electronica experimentalist and previous Buzzin’ Fly collaborator and remixer, Christian Prommer (Fauna Flash, Compost, Sonar Kollektiv) on his expansive recent solo album ‘Teufelswerk’ it all added up to one thing in Ben’s mind – a possible Hell/Prommer collaboration for Buzzin’ Fly. Could the mainspring behind German techno and electro-clash merge with an electronica-jazz pioneer and create a new deep house sound?
The answer is here – ‘Freak It’ – a track that operates on the fault-line of all genres; part brutal, part contemplative, a journey of twisted jazz trumpets, distorted voices and pulsating deep techno loops.
On the flip, Spencer Parker distills the essence of the mood and builds a superbly subtle slow-burn sub-bass dub.
Enjoy. Buzz buzz.
