De La Soul once declared that three was the magic number – and in the case of Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and DJ/producer Axwell, that couldn’t be closer to the truth. Collectively known as the Swedish House Mafia, the trio are that rare breed; friends who act like brothers who work together, play together and genuinely love each other to bits. “We all go and do our own thing, but without each other we wouldn’t be the same,” says Seb sweetly.
Have you always been friends?
Axwell: “No. I only moved to Stockholm six years ago – I got my studio and didn’t know many people but before I knew it, Sebastian had forced his way into my life! I met him out drinking one night. He’s a very social person. I…
We managed to catch up with Dave Spoon, of BBC Radio 1 and Toolroom Records fame - read what he had to say below…
So firstly, how did you initially hook up with the guys at Toolroom?
It was totally by chance! I was buying a record collection off someone called Own and then realized that he worked at Toolroom Records, so I spoke to him and sent a basic demo that same day of “21st Century”. The next morning Mark Knight called me and the rest is history as they say! It was meant to happen :)
How did you feel when they asked you to provide a mix for the Toolroom Knights series?
Well I did a couple of compilations last year, but to do one for Toolroom is an…
How did you get your foot in the door of the world of dance music?
Andi: I spent 2 weeks work experience in 1996 at the council in Huddersfield making weak tea and choosing the best fonts for new road signs.. which made me take a long hard look into ways of making a living out of my hobby and not getting a proper job. I used to make tapes of old hardcore, drum and bass and rave and sell them outside school for £2.60 – so I figured it was the way forward. I managed to blag my way into the studios of Kiss FM in Leeds and worked for free throughout college. I used to be the guy who sat in with all the specialist DJs making sure…

Could you explain what the Perceptions of Pacha concept is all…
Do you have any special Pacha memories from down the years?
Yeah, last year was a big experience to play with Pete tong, since he has helped me a lot, pushing and playing my debut album ‘The Last resort’ and many of my remixes… such as remixes for Moby, Royksopp, The Knife and Pet Shop Boys. It was really fun finally playing with him
When did you first visit the club?
It was 3 years ago, together with DJ T.O.M. I used to play the keyboard live and he would Dj. So I am really looking forward to playing this year because I am the DJ now and I find a lot of joy in doing that. It’s different than just playing the keyboard.
Do you find yourself playing in any way differently…
Since bursting onto the scene in the last 12 months, their raucous, no-holds-barred brand of peak-time electro has seen them support Klaxons on tour, bag new talent features from Mixmag and I-DJ, been chosen as Featured Artists on Myspace, had an Electro Single Of The Month accolade from DJMag, been booked for Wireless and Glastonbury festivals, and received support from the likes of Erol Alkan, Pete Tong, Paul Woolford, Darren Emerson, Mason, 2ManyDJs, Philippe Zdar, Eddy Temple Morris and Fergie. Not bad going at all.
They started building up their fanbase through Myspace and gathered a cult following from their tracks and shows, selling out venues across their native Ireland and later the UK. They have signed to Gung-Ho! Recordings, and are releasing their debut album called We Just Are later…
