Because we like An Horse, here’s a bit of news on their new album before the curtain does drop…

We are so excited and happy to announce our new record WALLS will be released on April 26 in the US on Mom+Pop Music. Release dates for Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Canada will be announced shortly. Sit tight.

We recorded the album last summer in Vancouver with our friend Howard Redekopp. We wrote the songs before then…obviously. Some were written a while before, some a few weeks. Every song we decided to record became a tiny, helpless baby that we helped grow up/influence. I prefer not to see it as a parental thing but more as an older sibling. Some had terrible growing pains and at times looked like they were going to be ungrateful red-headed step children (both Damon and I are/were red heads and I am a step child). Others were low maintenance dream boats that fed themselves. I much preferred the later. Regardless, we have 12 new songs that we worked really hard on. On April 26th so you can hear them too.

A new record means a lot of new things. New songs, new artwork, new places to play, new merchandise and so on. The new art and merch is much more easy for me and Damon to judge because well…we didn’t do it! We got to work with some amazing artists this time around. We have some exciting pre-order packages available too including an An Horse pillowcase, a signed poster, an exclusive t-shirt, a cd and a lovely 180 gram vinyl. OHHHH! It’s just all too much. I need to have a lie down.

We have announced a handful of dates in the US and Germany and there are plenty more to come! We see all your tweets and facebook requests to play certain towns and countries. We will do our best so keep checking in.

Sail safe.

To celebrate Bedrock’s 12th anniversary, John Digweed has compiled 21 outstanding exclusive tracks and remixes from established and new artists to form Bedrock 12. Bedrock is synonymous with releasing the highest quality forward-thinking electronic dance music and has enjoyed a highly successful year so far and this new compilation will further cement the label’s reputation around the globe.

Following on from John Digweed’s outstanding (mixed) Structures LP, Bedrock 12 once again showcases the sound of the label in 2010, featuring a plethora of exquisite deep house, tech-house and techno, joining the dots and forging the future. Not only does the album feature a host of established stars – Robert Babicz, Quivver, King Unique, Christian Smith, Nick Warren, Digweed & Muir – it also showcases new and upcoming talent like Maetrik, Wiretappeur, Max Cooper, Wehbba, and more.

The strength of new international talent from the likes of Spain, Germany and Brazil, points to the huge global appeal of the Bedrock label, and a bright future for dance music. The high-ranking established artists are kept firmly on their toes by the new upcoming stars of the future.

Having created a stunning remix of Guy J’s ‘Esperanza’ on the recent ‘Structures’ album, the rising Spanish star, Sistema, has created an exclusive track for Bedrock 12. Krace Gelly is a suitably deep album opening, tech head-nodder with plenty of twists and turns to keep things very interesting indeed, and a teasing taster for a debut Bedrock EP planned for 2011. Sistema is the latest incarnation of Manuel Ruiz, the maverick Barcelona-born producer who in the last ten years has been producing and recording under such monikers as Neue Lärmklassiker, Medio Escinico and 100.cia.

Anyone who has heard the stunning low-slung, seriously heavy-duty groove that Maetrik created on his remix of John Digweed & Nick Muir’s latest single Satellite will be thrilled to know that this Valencia based artist is present and correct here on Bedrock 12 with, not only a bonus exclusive unreleased funky remix of the same single, but also a deeply energetic & invigorating debut track of his own in Glob Monster. Once again, Maetrik shows exactly why he’s such an exciting prospect and is making incredible leaps and bounds, creating some of the most devastating and unique music right now with his blend of techno, house, funk, and electro.

Wiretappeur is a production partnership between Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stel. Their two versions of Too Much Space on Bedrock 12 show off their deep understanding of the power of melody, and are superb fresh and innovative deep house with a chilled, lush electronic reprise. Their productions have already earned them heartfelt praise and support from many of their peers as well as a wide variety of the industry’s top DJs, including Steve Bug, Luciano and Josh Wink. Their My Real Name Is track and remix of Dirty Mongrel were a standout tracks on Structures. A mark of how highly they are regarded is that they will be remixing the next Digweed and Muir single on Bedrock.

The Hamburg club scene is ably represented by Epic, a stylish collaboration between Vincenzo & Lovebirds. Vincenzo was originally spotted and guided by Steve Bug, released his debut LP on the Dessous label and is now an internationally respected producer. Lovebirds is the solo project of Sebastian ‘Basti’ Doering, also well known as Knee Deep. Together, Vincenzo and Basti have created a lush piano laden deep house track for Bedrock 12 and the title says it all. Watch out for a new EP at the end of 2010.

He says it’s an attempt to distil emotion into sound. Max Cooper’s techno ranges from stark electronica remixes of huge bands like Hot Chip and Au Revoir Simone to the fuzzy, buzzing dancefloor sound of his breakthrough Serie releases. His Bedrock debut, Ediolic Spectra, is another step towards perfecting his unique take on electronica, and results from John Digweed playing lots of Max’s productions in his sets. The big man is mighty impressed with this rising producer.

The classic Rumblefish by Tone Depth (aka Canadian Tony Papadopoulos) originally appeared on the Bedrock label as a 12” release in April 2002 (Bed31). Having been championed by Hernan Cattaneo, this Diyo remix was included in the mix on his last Renaissance album. Diyo’s combination of melodies, atmospheric sounds, and subtle grooves continues to impress whenever played out, and is included here as a full track for the first time.

Hailing from Brazil, Wehbba made a big impression with his remix of Christian Smith’s Flyertalk on Structures, and this dentist graduate, licensed diver and Jiu Jitsu fighter is in fine form again with Mammut, his debut track on Bedrock.

Alan Fitzpatrick’s Reflections single on Bedrock, was an anthem of the highest order, so it’s with great excitement that he returns with Involve. A sizzling techno masterpiece from one of the hottest artists on the scene today, shows exactly why the biggest DJ’s on the planet rate this man so highly. Involve takes things to the next level.

Luis Junior (real name, Luis Vaquero Garcia) is a well-known producer, club DJ and radio DJ from the new Spanish electronic music scene, and is becoming a regular on Bedrock. His Colache EP and BG have already been on many people’s favourites lists this year, and his deeply hypnotic electronic re-work of Misstress Barbara’s Azzuri (a classic taken from the Bedrock vaults) is set to follow suit.

With a music career already spanning nearly two decades, comprising five albums and multiple singles, some could think that Robert Babicz would be ready to settle down for a quiet life, however, nothing could be further from the truth. He continues to reveal his talent and skill as one of Europe’s most essential techno producers with his first release on a UK label since November 1990! Welcome To The 90’s is yet another stunning creation from this hero to many.

Quivver is world-renowned DJ/producer/songwriter John Graham. While his recording and remix discography speaks for itself, John’s music has become a vital ingredient in the best DJ sets around the globe. His recent Bedrock single release – Yeah Yeah / Boom Boom / In Your Boat – has been a firm favourite with everyone, so its no wonder that the two versions of his latest track, Orgazoid, are featured here on Bedrock 12.

Another Bedrock 12 landmark is the first time King Unique & Anthony Pappa have worked together in the studio. Vamoosh is a suitably dynamic dancefloor devastator from this UK – Australian tag team. Have they really never worked together before? A marriage made in heaven, surely? Matt Thomas has also created another trademark scorcher with Spikes that will keep fans of his huge 2000000 Suns single very happy indeed.

Structures featured a top-notch big room makeover of Digweed & Muir’s Satellite from Tronic main man, Christian Smith, and the big room vibes are most definitely flowing once again through his two versions of System Of Survival here on Bedrock 12, as he weaves and winds together his trademark genre blurring wonder. Mr Smith has been championing his essentially funky mix of house and techno for more than a decade now, creating a highly individual cauldron of chunky grooves with loads of energy. With his own Tronic label releasing some fine fare right now, its no wonder that he was feeling inspired to deliver this superb exclusive for Bedrock.

Nick Warren is a man who needs no introduction to any self-respecting music fan. CD1 draws to a close with an exclusive ambient mix of In Search Of Silver. Which is a taster of high highly anticipated forthcoming single release on Bedrock this autumn.

Between them, John Digweed and Nick Muir, producers of the finest electronic dance music, have been involved in many pivotal moments in the world of club music and have in many ways helped to define genres & push the boundaries further over the years. As with all their releases, Bilder and Nick’s solo track Burkina Faso here on Bedrock 12, are mission statements to show that they are not resting on past laurels but always developing their sound in an exciting direction.

Luca Venezia, aka Drop The Lime, is a difficult character to pin down. He runs one of the most influential labels in the emerging heavy bass party music circuit in the US (Brooklyn-based Trouble & Bass), and is as comfortable DJing the occasional all-rockabilly set at an underground bar as he is serving bass-heavy club throttlers to hundreds of hungry, obsessive fans, lost in a sea of T&B t-shirts and pumping fists. Similar to their creator, Drop The Lime’s productions have an innate ability to disorient all traditional restrictions. Artfully fusing sounds and styles, his music manages to destroy the delicate politics of genres completely: an element that shines on his upcoming artist album (his second to date, out on Trouble & Bass this October).

“The new album has transformed into this mixture of rockabilly, surf, and western guitar influence melded into the dance music stuff that I’m known for doing. It was a really cool, natural progression. What happened was I started playing a lot of rockabilly, a lot of the songs that I grew up with, that my mom was playing. I started doing rockabilly sets in bars, and then I started to incorporate a few songs into my DJ sets. And people would lose their shit! It was so out of the blue and unexpected, and so organic compared to how electronic my sets were. And just naturally, I started doing my own edits and bootlegs, and that’s how the album sort of got shaped this way. The album includes vocals and I also play guitar.” – Drop The Lime

As a 7 year old in Manhattan, falling helpless to the romance of rock n roll (specifically the dramatic glamour of Ritchie Valens in ‘La Bamba’), Luca’s first guitar teacher suggested he purchase a drum machine to stay on beat, a foreshadowing purchase for his beat-orientated explorations later on. In fact, various dots connect along the way of his musical path – being forced to join his school’s gospel choir, falling into the New York punk and hardcore scene as teenager, discovering New York’s hard techno rave scene in his late teens, fortuitously being handed D&B mixes recorded from London’s pirate radio waves at 16 – in a way that almost seems fated. It was only a matter of time until destiny led him to a group of likeminded spirits who shared his DIY attitude and art-driven ethos, and the Trouble & Bass empire began.

“I started to get more into the 4/4 versions of the grime tracks, the grime instrumentals; on the B-side, there’d always be a 4/4 version. I loved the idea of a house tempo drum & bass sound. I started trying to make my own versions of that, and Math Head (T&B co-founder) did as well, but we didn’t have anywhere to put it out so we made our own label.

We’re all best friends in T&B – we all hang out all the time, and it probably goes back to us all going to art school. We’re very DIY. We’ve always done things ourselves in terms of the artwork, the promotion; it’s always been very hands-on with everything. I hope that comes through with our branding – we want to make the crowd and the fans feel like they’re a part of something, a part of a family. We’ve recently been doing these series of singles called ‘Heavy Bass Champions of the World,’ and it’s just straight-up dance club tunes that are fun. I did it so that Trouble & Bass as a label can focus on albums and really build the artists – like myself, AC Slater, Little Jinder, Supra1, 77 Klash – and they can really do songs that aren’t only for the club. And ‘Heavy Bass Champions of the World’ are a series of club bangers. I don’t want to get pigeonholed as a strictly dance label, so I really wanted to make a separation between the two.” – Drop The Lime

Pigeonholes are gracefully obliterated, and Drop The Lime’s signature all-in-the-box DJing style encompassed, on the thrilling, adventurous FABRICLIVE 53. As with all DTL mixes, the most unlikely beats and artists suddenly make perfect sense alongside one another: the raw 303s of Maurice introduce acid to Untold’s future bump, Drop The Lime’s own housey summer hit ‘Sex Sax’ steps and twirls to the swing of Bill Haley & His Comets, and the glittery synth pop of Little Jinder fades into the melodic grace of Reso’s dubbed-out ambience. Filled with teasings of Drop The Lime’s newest work, and of course his unmistakable vocals, overall the mix is every bit as rare and passionate – and unpredictable – as the charismatic artist himself.

“I’m surprised I got away with putting rockabilly on a FABRICLIVE CD! I wanted to make the mix timeless; it’s tempting to pick all of the cool hype tracks, or all of the newest tracks, but I wanted to make something that you could listen to a few years down the line and still love it. And it’s something you can listen to, it’s a mix, not necessarily something you want to pump your first in the air to. That’s what the club is for; I feel like a mix is for listening to and really appreciating the music. I start on the deeper side of things, a little bit of techy house and then I go into the new future garage sound that’s coming out of London, like Untold, and then I go more into my signature heavy bass 4/4 sound into a little bit of Dutch-influenced stuff, into some tribal, percussive house tracks…it’s all over the place, but I really tried to build a rollercoaster of a ride. It goes huge, then gets taken back down, and built back up, and really ends beautifully with some ambient stuff.” – Drop The Lime

Timo Maas is a master of reinvention. Emerging during the excess of trance’s heyday in the late ‘90s with his “Wet & Hard” style (a concept originally coined by Corvin Dalek & Mark Reeder) that fused techno, progressive house and funk in a riveting futuristic manner, he quickly became the remixer du jour for both the club underground and the commercial big leagues. Paul Oakenfold signed up his debut album Loud for his Perfecto imprint – a modern classic that effortlessly bridged accessibility and raw dancefloor sleaze from electro to breaks to tech and hip-hop – with his second album Pictures sharing a label with the likes of Muse and Garbage.
And let’s not forget that remix of Azzido Da Bass, which went on to inspire a generation of LFO-loving dubstep and bass producers. More recently, after a hiatus of a couple of years, he cast aside his chart-breaking fame and got back to his roots, re-embracing his love of techno, teaming up with Italy’s Santos in the studio and becoming a stalwart of Sven Väth’s scene-leading Cocoon Recordings, smashing everyone’s preconceptions of his work wide open. This period of resurrection saw the duo team up under the banner of Mutant Clan, again breaking down musical barriers and giving the world their warped version of techno.

Timo Maas is an artist who will succeed at whatever he puts his hand to, and his next move is always highly anticipated. Behind the decks, he packs one of the hardest punches around, pulling you inside his hypnotic world and creating sets that live, breath and thump as one cohesive, gargantuan entity. So dedicated is he to his craft that he’s built a club on his own land – a Funktion One-packed barn next to his farmhouse in Germany where he rigorously tests out his newest productions and finds. Only a DJ and producer as innovative, technically brilliant and downright loveable could be worthy of an undertaking as prestigious and lauded as the mixing of a Balance compilation. Fittingly, this is Maas’ first official compilation for 9 years.

“The format of the Balance mix series was always quite appealing to me; to spread myself out over 2 CDs without essentially having to “rock” a crowd from the beginning is a very good thing. I was able to also include deeper, downbeat, “earlier set” material, that I personally like to listen to, but am not essentially playing out on a normal club night. For me “the trip” is quite important to create, with a mix of brand new, even exclusive material, but also tracks that rock my world at the moment and most essentially have rocked my world for many years (the so called “classics”)” – Timo Maas

Maas draws us into his musical world with two sumptuous cuts of ambient electronica from his studio, before boldly grabbing our attention with Nicolas Jaar’s already-classic, woozy early morning anthem Time For Us.
Disc 1 is all about displaying his melodic, charismatic, emotive side – the turgid electro pop of Vector Lovers, the lush disco licks of Toby Tobias and the tripped-out eccentricity of DJ Koze keeping you hooked, the tempo and rhythmic clout slowly building towards the middle of the mix. Jazzy pianos are drawn in, Maas reminding us that this electronic lark is not the be all and end all of music as the opposing tech house backbone becomes more prominent. Mathias Schaffhäuser’s The 1st Thing signals that Timo’s tech vein is starting to throb, with animal noises permeating the sexy wiggle of the track. A slice of classic Tenaglia ups the ante, and it looks like we’re set for a thumping finale – before the majestic, blissed-out melody of Carl Craig’s At Les pulses in, setting us up for a classy and experimental closer which sees Maas and Santos collide with Elgar and William Orbit.

“The basic rules off DJing haven’t really changed for me. Of course the technical possibilities have, but in the end, it’s all about the selection of music you play – not about the technical skills you’re having when you’re on stage.” – Timo Maas

The second act makes no attempt to disguise its intent, laden with thudding kicks, plenty of rolling percussion and the intricate attention to detail that peppers his sets and productions. It’s largely comprised of works from him and his colleagues from his quirky new label Rockets & Ponies, with numerous exclusives across both discs in fact. Elements that don’t always reveal themselves at first listen are stacked all around this mix – intricate layers, trickery in the stereo field, unearthly effects and chiefly, hefty groove throughout. At first tracks come thick and fast – more sexy Maas magic, into some wonderfully deep Kenny Larkin, before the mix begins to unwind and take its time about things. Things start taking a turn for the weird, clearly revealing Timo’s love for “tripping the ass out of people” – his remix of We Fell To Earth’s Lights Out showing tinges of the ‘70s psych rock that he and Santos while away hours in the studio to, and eerie sci-fi sounds crawling all over the place. Eventually the psychedelic feel subsides, giving way to the blissful melody of Alex Dolby’s re-rub of the Rockets & Ponies anthem Chinese Massage, and the mix then dips down once again into deeper territory before unleashing a torrent of acid filth. Timo’s Lost Veteranos project appears with the gnarly, industrial intensity of It’s Wronger, before a classic 303 double-header from Emmanuel Top and Hardfloor bangs you into submission, taking you back to a wonderfully simple but no less impactful time. A sprinkling of magic dust rounds off this heady compilation in the form of his own epic, unreleased version of Placebo’s typically yearning Ashtray Heart – a fittingly powerful finale.

“It was quite an intense process spread out over 4 month to listen, re-listen, collect and choose the music for my Balance CDs. I don’t know how many tracks I was listening to with my “compilation ears” – maybe a few thousand – and thanks to my amazing production partner Santos, I was even able to fill spaces on the mix with the right tracks that we wrote in the production process just for Balance. Nearly everything exclusive was road-tested over the month before I mixed it too. I’m very happy with the result.” – Timo Maas

‘Touchstone’ is an album all about illuminating musical inspirations. Once Richard had wrapped on its production he gathered together all the scribbled on Post It notes that had been amassed in the studio, the ones that he’d been using to jot the inspirations down (along with some additional thoughts/recollections on the tracks) and produced a ‘users guide to Touchstone’! So, with just one week to go before the album is released, here’s his full inside-track on Touchstone…

Intravenous: This piece of music, which weaves in and out of a genius arpeggio played by Nigel Summers is a nod to ‘On The Run’ by Floyd.. Rather than sync Nigel’s guitar to the bpm of the sequencer, I decided instead to record Nigel’s guitar dry, and sync everything else to it precisely. Great idea in theory – not so great in practice. It took me an entire day to achieve, but the slight changes in tempo throughout the track give it a sense of urgency which I think is difficult to achieve with a static tempo. ‘Intravenous’ was written as a precursor to ‘Twisted Wing’, together they take the album into a tense and darker middle section.

Electric Love: I love uplifting trance music, but find that many tracks these days focus too much on the percussion at the expense of the melodic elements. Rather than adding percussive layers, I created movement and energy with lots of running analogue arpeggiated lines instead. The song is a love song really, it’s about considering how your actions affect others around you, be they lovers or friends. It’s a dreamy trance record. Bill McGruddy (the vocalist) and I spent a day freezing on the south coast of England to make the video in January 2010.

Twisted Wing: The opening line ‘You cannot fly, and every night you dream of scaling heights’ came to me whilst listening to a radio program about an actress in the 50′s now retired. She was describing herself as having ‘dusty wings’, and would relive her nights on stage in her dreams… it was incredibly moving. The lyric suggested a majestic orchestral progression to me set at an energetic pace. I wrote the lyrics with Julie Scott. When she hits those high notes I get goose bumps every time.

Slowmotion: Written with Finland’s finest Dj (and my good friend) Orkidea , ‘Slowmotion’ has undergone many incarnations, rearrangements and remixes. It didn’t make it onto Rain Stars Eternal, it just didn’t work with the rest of the music… but I knew it had a rightful place on Touchstone. The addition of the Édith Piaf sample and the editing gave the track the extra dimension it required for a place on the album. Even though it is much slower than ‘Twisted Wing’ it seems to lift the pace at that point in the record, most bizarre!

The Best Way To Make Your Dreams Come True Is To Wake Up: A very long title, for sure, but as one of my colleagues said “what better than poetry in a title itself”! The title is a direct reference to the French poet Paul Valéry, who coined the phrase. I had fun with some new vocal compression techniques when recording this track, so much so that I tweeted the geekiest tweet of my life, of which I am thoroughly ashamed. I only began to feel comfortable with my own singing voice around the time of ‘Late Summer Fields’. The response from my fans to that track was a real surprise, and it freed me in a sense, to sing the lyrics I was previously writing for other artists. The lyrics in ‘The Best Way’ were a product of my insomnia, when I’m working on music I struggle to sleep properly, in addition, when I recorded the vocal take for this, I had a terrible throat infection, but being the masochist that I am, I thought it would lend the performance a rough ‘edge’.

Zeitgeist: Orkidea and I both love Trance music from the early 90′s for it’s intelligent arrangements, the inclusion of many different parts and the weaving of different textures and elements throughout the tracks. Each time we write together, we assign different parts of a simple melodic progression to different instruments – it’s a ‘question and answer’ mentality. Zeitgeist is a pure club record, its relentless arrangement doesn’t let up for a moment. I fell in love with ‘Yellow Moon’ by Catbird when it appeared on the Solaris International show as a ‘Chillout Moment’ back in 2008, the ‘Fly with Me’ vocal sample was shoe-in for this track.

The Last Defeat (Part Two): As a teenager I loved the way that Genesis would split an epic track into two parts on an album, so I decided to go one step further and save ‘Part Two’ for the next album. It’s one of those little bits of detail which resonate with fans too. Lucia Holm of Sunscreem had long been a heroine of mine, I was delighted when I succeed at coaxing her into writing a vocal for the track. ‘Part One’ was, to my mind. a musical vision of a battlefield when all is quiet and peaceful, but Lucia interpreted it as making love for the first time, I was practically in tears when I heard the song. The Strings, Rhodes and Hammond added some drama to the song as it takes a diversion into the dubby middle section. I edited this down from a mammoth 13 minutes for the ‘Touchstone’ sequence.

There’s A Universe: Musically the combination of electronica and 60′s instrumentation is a pastiche of influences from many great British bands of the last 40 years. Billy and I both sing on this one, spookily we struggled to remember who had sung what when it came to the backing vocals, our voices seem to morph into one. I recorded 16 layers of harmonies for the ‘aah aah’ section, if you listen closely at one point you can hear the telephone ringing in the background. The song itself is an ode to universal love, grabbing it with both hands when it’s there, and savouring the memory when it has gone. After all, as the man said “It’s better to regret something you have done, than to regret something you haven’t done’.
