We’ve only had one rule in the Evil Nine studio over the years and that is NO SAXOPHONE; it would appear that this rule has now been broken. It’s been a struggle trying to find acceptable examples of saxophone use and so far we’ve only come up with ‘Careless Whisper’ & Nomad’s ‘Devotion’, hopefully ‘Auto’ will be the third.

The lead track from the EP is a little more stripped-back than our last few releases but again includes heavy classic house, techno, post punk, italo disco and UK garage influences whilst also bringing something new. We’ve also kept to the Evil Nine tradition of working with our favorite rappers, this time with our friend B Dolan (Strange Famous) who provides the main hook to ‘Auto’. On the imaginary B-side we’ve got a remix from the awesome Broke One whose music just keeps getting better and better. He turns our original into a big old rave-stabbed bangggaaahrrrr.

We’ve always loved the ‘Donk’ synth sound and have been trying to include it in a track for a while; finally we succeeded by squeezing it into the second track from the EP ‘Silent Runner’. This one comes off a little more UKG than the other and ends up sounding a bit like Reel 2 Real’s ‘I Like To Move It’ (but not really), we thought seeing as ‘Auto’ was more minimal we should do something with a big riff to go along side it and this has a big riff in it.

Lots of love, Pat and Tom.

ps. As a gift to our readers here is a link to to download the new For Lovers Mixtape – Part III ‘Love In A Cold Climate’. The tracklist is below.

As 2010 draws to a close, the time has come to unveil a very special release from Denis A and his Moscow-based DAR label. This is the third instalment in a series of remix releases for the label, and this time features legendary progressive house pioneers SPOOKY, who show they remain one of the most exciting acts around, with their reworking of Denis A’s ‘Beholder’ track, taken from the current Das Auge EP (DAR017).

This impressive package also showcases the remix talents of emerging UK talent – Scotty.A – his remix of Denis A’s ‘Heroin’ was the winning entry in the recent DAR remix competition on the excellent Dutch music site – www.laptoprockers.eu – so you can hear exactly why this outstanding young producer is definitely a talent to be watched closely during 2011. His extraordinary passion for music and dedication to his craft is certain to see his career soar in the coming months.

“I was hooked instantly when I first heard Heroin. At the time we just finished our remix contest with Eat Static, and Heroin was the perfect candidate for the next one. I was really happy Denis went along when we asked him. We got some really good mixes but the remix by Scotty.A is a clear winner, and deserves it to be included on DAR018.” – Peter Berger (Editor, Laptoprockers.eu)

Since its launch in 2006 <http: www.laptoprockers.eu=""> is a website about electronic music – everything digital – and related subjects. Daily topics include exclusive interviews, album reviews and news about tech stuff such as iPhone apps. Laptoprockers organizes several remix contests per year and is a great source for anyone interested in making music.

It was in 1992 that Charlie May and production partner Duncan Forbes made their maiden voyage as Spooky. After meeting and becoming firm friends, they cut their first record for seminal progressive imprint Guerilla Records – ‘Don’t Panic’. It was to prove highly influential in the futuristic new movement in dance music – progressive house – that took the rhythms of acid, and married them to aquatic depths of Detroit techno with overlays of ambient music, to create a fresh new hybrid.

Heralded as figureheads of the progressive house scene, Spooky cemented this by creating their sky strafing and ambitious long-player ‘Gargantuan’.
One of the first dance albums of its kind, this pinnacle album would go on to spawn a million sound-a-likes, establishing the production wizardry of Charlie May, whose tweaking and pitch-perfect ear was set to have a huge influence, both in front of and behind the scenes for Sasha.

Scotty.A has emerged in the last year as an outstanding producer. His first few productions have seen him recognised by the Global Underground label as well as Russian dj/producer Denis A.

Scotty began dj’ing in 1999 and over the following years started to gain local recognition appearing on line-ups for various events in his hometown whilst developing his own distinctive sound which can be recognised in his dj sets and productions today. Originally driven by the strong trance released in the late 90’s Scotty’s sound has evolved to include elements of house, techno, electronica and progressive – Scotty himself is keen to avoid being pinned down to only one genre, describing his sound as a hypnotic amalgamation of many different elements which take the listener on a unique journey. Scotty’s enthusiasm for the music is apparent in his dj sets which has lead him to play at the world famous clubs Turnmills, Ministry of Sound and Pacha alongside names such as Dave Seaman, Danny Howells, Jimmy Van M and many others. You can currently catch Scotty and long-time dj collaborator Jumby playing regular sets at the legendary Electronic Sessions boat parties on the Thames in London.

Scotty first started to take a serious interest in producing his own tracks in Spring 2009, the quality of his work seemed to jump forward meteorically with each new track and in September 2009 his track “Underestimated” was announced as the unanimous winner of a Global Underground bedroom producer competition sponsored by Mixmag & BoxFresh Clothing. Scotty has since had a production signed to Miami based label Aquasounds. Most recently his remix of Denis A’s track “Heroin” won the www.laptoprockers.eu DAR remix competition, with Denis currently supporting some of Scotty’s other tracks in his live sets and podcasts.

As well as continuing to dj whenever possible Scotty is unrelenting in the studio, constantly working on new tracks, remixes and bootlegs for his dj sets and continually developing and defining his own sound. With interest from labels, producers, fellow dj’s and most importantly the crowds at his live gigs Scotty A is surely set to be an prominent figure in the future of electronic music.

Vector Lovers AKA Martin Wheeler, well known for his futuristic innovation, is the subject of 2 excellent remixes and 2 remasters of some of his best electronic tracks. The high quality audio boundaries of Soma are pushed forward once again with the outstanding opening 2 tracks, complimented perfectly by an Andreas Henneberg remix of Genevieve, and a Marquez Ill remix of Melodies and Memory.

The 2010 remaster of Melodies and Memory opens the release, the dreamy synths and solid drums allowing pads to build around them creating a unique ambience for the listener. A huge, slow-moving bass line allows the percussion to advance intricately, as the character flooded vocals fill the track. The track title seems so fitting, the track almost appearing as a memory in the mind of Martin’s fans.

Classic single Girl + Robot is also remastered for the EP, and overtakes the bliss of track 1 with a faster paced, exciting intro. The majestically modulated synths almost take us to another world as the track moves through each section with grace and confidence. The track moves yet further beyond our expectations and becomes like a modern day classical arrangement with the main melody completing a beautiful masterpiece.

Andreas Henneberg and Marquez Ill bring us back down to Earth by re-introducing us to the world of techno. Both remixes combine the ambient and dance aspects of Soma amazingly, keeping so many emotions flowing. The forward thinking sounds of Vector Lovers continue to astound and have been exploited in such an ultramodern way, keeping the release feeling fresh, whilst maintaining the labels ongoing originality and excellent quality.

It’s the same man, the same producer, and he’s got the same quintessential attitude towards life and music as he ever had! We’re speaking about Martin Solveig of course, and he’s back with a brand new single, simply called ‘Hello’.

Of course, there is nothing ‘simple’ about this record, far from it; it’s brilliant, and as with everything the Frenchman does, comes with a jaw dropping video.

Let’s not forget Martin’s last release – the very lush and very pop ‘Boys & Girls’, a track that clocked up over 2 million hits on Youtube and brought to an end the ‘C’est La Vie’ chapter of his award winning career. It’s Martin’s affections for Dragonette that have led him to invite them back for this next record that once again feature Martina Sorbara’s untouchable vocals.

‘Hello’ is a funky, driving number, doused with chunky bass riffs, hypnotic grooving synths, skipping percussion and vocal hooks that will plant themselves in the mind of even the most cynical of critics all summer long.

The video is quite something else… Let us indulge you…

Set amongst the media furore of The Roland Garros French Tennis Open, ‘Hello’ follows the story of a DJ who is in training because it takes “a lot of skill and a lot of energy to become a DJ”. Spurred on by the off-the-wall plots of his manager, French DJ Gregory Darsa, Martin finds himself unwittingly staged on centre court for the match of his life against Bob Sinclar. Sinclar is a seasoned pro, and Martin’s inexperience on the court shows – that is, until the love of his life shows up. But things of course don’t always run so smoothly… all’s fair in love and war, right?

The new single, with its huge crossover appeal and popular structure, is firm evidence of Martin’s musical prowess, unstoppable energy and strong sense of humour as he delivers a shot of cynicism and good-hearted humour into the arm of pop music. This highly improbable match was shot on location in front of 12,000 spectators, the day before the beginning of the competition thanks to the exceptional kindness of the Roland Garros’ management. The extravagant duel was punctuated with unexpected but welcome interventions from real international tennis stars such as Novak Djokovic, Gaël Monfils, Olivia Sanchez, Mathilde Johansson and hosted by Nelson Montfort.

A breakthrough summertime smash, ‘Hello’ deserved a video with flair, passion and originality to rightfully catapult it forward. Welcome back Martin Solveig.

Released last week, Benny Benassi’s ‘Spaceship’ is the lead single from the GRAMMY award-winning producer’s forthcoming artist album due for release early this Fall on leading independent label, Ultra Records.

‘Spaceship’ maintains the Benassi signature sound and adds a pop tinge which is laced with sultry vocals from globally renowned singer, Kelis, who recently released her gorgeous hit single ‘Acapella’. Together, Benassi and Kelis debuted the track at this year’s Ultra Music Festival in front of a record-breaking, sold-out crowd. Also collaborating on the single are Black Eyed Peas’ member, apl.de.ap and producer Jean-Baptiste, both of whom contribute incredible rhymes and vocal styling to the record.

The ‘Spaceship (Remixes)’ package includes a wide range of remixes from an incredible selection of artists: Fedde le Grand; EDX; Kris Menace; The Toxic Avenger; Datsu; Alex Gaudino & Jason Rooney; Nadastrom and Pance Party.

Benny Benassi rose to worldwide fame with the 2002 release of his enormous chart-topping hit single ‘Satisfaction’. It was with that tune that he initiated a new genre of music dubbed as Electro, which earned him the crown, Godfather of Electro. The demand for Benassi as a DJ is incredible and he headlines major festivals and venues around the world, including performances at this year’s Coachella – Indio, CA; Electric Daisy Carnival – Los Angeles; CA, Pacha – NYC; NY, Guvernment – Toronto, CANADA and Love Parade – Berlin, Germany.

There will be an extensive North American tour announced around the album, details forthcoming. For a complete list of tour dates and other Benassi information, visit Benny Benassi’s website.

Following an incredibly successful UK tour which saw John Butler Trio sell out some of the most prestigious venues in the country they are releasing their second single, ‘Close To You’ taken from their latest album ‘April Uprising.’

Butler outlines the meaning behind their chosen single: “Close To You is about a young man hitting the wall, realising that the life he’s living is not the one he wants. As much as he wants to break out, get away from everything, he goes back to the one he loves.”

Following the release of their fresh and thought provoking album, Butler feels his song writing is at its strongest: “When we started mixing, the question we were asking was, ‘Is this a great song?’ I don’t care how cool the rhythms are, how amazing it sounds. Even an instrumental has to have a voice that holds you and carries you through light and shade. If you have the voice then you have a song. And then you’re saying something.”

John Butler Trio are one of the most successful artists in Australia and never fail to disappoint when regularly playing to crowds of over 7000 people. Their increasing popularity doesn’t stop there, the trio have sold over a million albums worldwide and have played the most prestigious festivals ranging from Big Day Out, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Fuji Rock Festival and Coachella.

‘April Uprising’ is woven together by many of Butler’s musical influences ranging from roots, rock, reggae and hip-hop beats to dancehall. ‘Close To You’ provides another sound snippet of how diverse and talented John Butler Trio are. The colourful and intriguing video for ‘Close To You’ can be viewed on their Myspace page.

Spooky return to Renaissance with a brand new, updated version of their famed classic…

First released in 1993 on William Orbits legendary Guerrilla imprint, ‘Little Bullet’ is arguably one of the defining tracks of its generation; it’s influence and status has grown year on year as it continues to remain a fond favourite of DJs and clubbers alike. And it’s this enduring appeal that influenced Charlie May and Duncan Forbes to revisit the tune, albeit with initial trepidation as Charlie honestly admits, “We weren’t sure whether to re-work Bullet. Some things are best left alone.”

“However,” says Duncan picking up the conversation, “There was no harm in trying, so after locating the parts amongst a pile of DATs (which some may be amused to learn were the current studio door stop!), we decided to have little experiment and play around…”

The result was nothing short of spectacular and the duo swiftly realised it deserved a full release. Shot through with the classic sound of modern day Spooky, ‘Little Bullet’ is reborn in full contemporary techno glory. “Sound systems have come a long way sine the record was conceived and LB 2010 has been produced with these developments in mind,” they explain in unison.

One listen and it’s plain to hear they’re not kidding, this re-loaded Bullet is armed with a devastating bass line, whilst its synonymous pad and vocal now come with accentuated goose-bump beauty. Even the harshest critic will find it hard to argue this is one track that really does make the hairs on the back of head tingle. If further confirmation were needed just ask all those who were lucky enough to be on the floor at Bedrock’s Easter extravaganza at Matter during Digweed’s set.
