Hernan Cattaneo presents another exciting chapter in the Renaissance Masters Series with a brand new approach…

Hernan’s return to the Masters Series in 2010 brings with it an exciting new development. This year the ever-creative South American has slowed things down to present a distinctly cosmic disco-esque take on his inimitable sound.

“I felt it was time we took a fresh direction,” says Hernan, “But, although it was always going to be alternate, I wasn’t sure just what this direction should be. So, I locked myself away and started going through loads of music for inspiration. It wasn’t till I pitched a Henry Saiz track down (and it sounded brilliant) that I hit upon the idea of dropping everything back 15-20 BPMs on the first disc.”

Entitled ‘Day’, disc one is a beautiful, shimmering ride through Cattaneo’s audio world, its musical style the perfect antithesis of two’s club-inspired ‘Night’. But what’s all the more remarkable is how he’s also managed to work five (out of a whopping eleven) original productions, remixes and edits into the mix – no mean feat considering the unique nature of the material. “I know there’s a big debate amongst dance music fans about exclusives on compilations right now, but for me it’s a purely positive objective. Just as with the alternate style of the ‘Day’ mix, it’s another way of distinguishing the album from a live club set, a statement to the fact a lot more effort has gone into the project as whole,” he challenges. “I’ll not deny working outside of the traditional comfort zone of 125 (approx) BPM was easy, but between commissioning tracks from some of my favourite producers / friends, using or adapting my own productions and sourcing some amazing music (like the fantastic Sigur Ros track that closes the ‘Day’ mix – it’s such a great song!), I think it came together really well.”

Although ‘Night’ finds Hernan in more familiar territory, it draws upon the remaining six exclusives to ensure his fresh authorship and feel of the mix continues throughout, and comes backed by tantilising gems from likes of Way Out West, Henry Saiz, Quivver and Tone Depth, to name but a few.

This summer he packed his suitcase and “recordbags” and moved to Ibiza again. For the sun, the beaches and the parties, to the DJ’s and partypeople’s Mecca. Enfant Terrible and scallywag, turntable Samurai and DJ legend: Tom Novy, one of the world’s busiest House DJ’ s and producers.

Tom has shaped the international club scene for more than 15 years now. He adores the music and the parties and passionately celebrates both together with his fans. His international chart and club hit list meanwhile seems endless. In his early days he made his break-through with the now legendary and often cited “Superstar” single. Anthems like “Pumpin”, house hymns like “I Rock” or “Your Body” and radio friendly hits like “Take It” and “Now Or Never” followed. Also in 2008 he created an absolute masterpiece with his remake of “Rhythm Is A Dancer” as Novy vs. Snap, which the annual Beatport polls awarded the “Best House Track of the Year”.

His Ibiza base is the “Space”. On the club’s terrace he has rocked the Island’s best parties Sunday after Sunday over the last years. Since Danny Tenaglia was not able to continue last year’s successful Thursday Residency, Tom together with the Space management decided to take over Thursday.

This year Tom has arranged and mixed a top-class compilation entitled “Follow Me To Ibiza“ in co-operation with his label Kosmo Records as homage to his summer residence. On this album, club gourmets find previously unreleased remixes of classics such as BBE “Seven Days & One Week” by Tom & Jerry (Tom Novy & Jerry Ropero), Tomcraft’ s “Loneliness” by Orli & Da Ragnio, Da Hool’ s “Meet Her At The Loveparade” by TV Rock and “Exterminate” by Novy vs. Snap. It also includes remixes of his greatest hits, hot new stuff by the Maestro himself and insider tips such as Genji Yoshida, ZoeXenia, Fennek, EnoC, Adrian Bahil and Orli & Da Ragnio as well as brandnew tracks by colleagues such as Kid Massive, Oliver Lang, Per QX (Cover of Depeche Mode’ s “Everything Counts”) and Van Gogh vs. Eniac. It is completed by cult tracks such as Orli & Marties`”White Flower” in the Jerome Isma-Ae remix.

Tom has whipped up two DJ mixes for “Follow Me To Ibiza“. The somewhat more chilled “Deep As The Ocean Mix” which beautifully works both on the i-Pod at the beach and as sound track for the sundowner and the “High As The Novy Mix“ where the title is the motto: Crank it up.

Hola!

Summer is here! The Plastic Fantastic HQ has been basking in sunshine for almost a whole week now, which is pretty unheard of in this part of the world. And as a perfect match for this wonderful weather, we have the next PFT release from Mexico, where it is always this sunny.

Atone (a.k.a. Alain Jasso Martinez) is from Mexico City. He has had residencies in various club in the city since 1999, and has been producing his own tracks since 2002. We first heard of him from a track on the 2006 World Expo DJs compilation, from where he went on to release various track on Mexico’s BIT Records, such as “Centroamerican Beat”, “Percussive Drama” and “Strings For The Moment”. He now also has a weekly radio show that airs in Brazil and Argentina.

For his new Plastic Fantastic release he has three tracks. “Caotic Fly” is a hypnotic summer-hit that we expect to hear regularly at beach parties all over Mediterranean and beyond. With “Fractal 115″ Atone gets heavier on the bassline for a slighly darker track. The EP finishes off with “Hot Hot Love” with an seductive vocal from Ivaly Love.

Before we go for our siesta, here is Plastic Fantastic’s 76th: From Mexico, the “Caotic Fly EP” by Atone.

Adiós,

Sheffield’s leading musicians have joined forces to create a celebration of the city’s vibrant musical scene and outstanding musical heritage. Working in partnership with the city’s independent venues and promoters, the inaugural Tramlines event sets out to capture the sound of the city.

Tramlines 09, which takes place from July 24th to July 26th, will feature line ups curated by the city’s artists. The multi venue festival will be featured in up to 30 venues with a 4,000 capacity main stage on Devonshire Green.

As well as the musical muscle provided by the three curators, special guests adding their weight to proceedings include the legendary Ibiza Rocks, award winning music website Drowned In Sound and city festival veterans Adventures In the Beetroot Field, (the people behind Stag and Dagger and the Camden Crawl).

The festival, which has enjoyed enthusiastic support from Sheffield City Council will form part of a week long celebration of Sheffield’s music, entitled Sheffield Music City. Hallam FM will be making an appearance, programming the main stage on the Saturday with Little Boots, Pixie Lott and The Panics amongst those already confirmed.

Head of programming and the man responsible for mobilising Sheffield’s musical mafia into action, James O’Hara explains:

Our aim with Tramlines was to create a festival atmosphere across the city all weekend. Ultimately we would like this to grow into a kind of urban Glastonbury.

Jon, Matt and Toddla have given us amazing support – leaning on their friends in the music industry has allowed us to put on an event that is entirely free.

Whilst the curators are still keeping the line ups close to their chests the event is guaranteed plenty of attention with all three artists releasing albums this Summer.
As well as the Tramlines event, a host of other activity will be going on around the city as part of the Sheffield Music City celebration. Musical workshops, a kids area and a community stage celebrating different aspects of the city’s musical wealth are already programmed in.

It should be an amazing weekend, as well as the thirty or so venues taking part in Tramlines, we are encouraging the whole city to get involved, so you should expect to hear music on every street corner.

Get on board!

Fellow ‘ziners Drowned In Sound, have an interview with with Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders available for your viewing pleasure; here

Name-checked as one to watch by Annie Mac, Mylo, Calvin Harris, and blogs alike, 23 year old BURNS is the electronic wunderkind tipped to take British dance music kicking and screaming into the next decade.

One limited release, key support tours, and bootlegs ranging from Altern 8 to Prince, have brought him a torrent of international attention. In a scramble for some of his production gold dust, BURNS has also been called up for remix duty by the likes of Empire of the Sun, Late Of The Pier, Passion Pit, Filthy Dukes, Yuksek, Melanie Fiona, Calvin Harris, and the Gossip.

BURNS’ ‘ 2 (‘Turbo’/’HeartBeats’), is the second instalment in his series of four singles (these being BURNS’ ‘1’/’2’/’3’/4’, the title being representative of the number of tracks on each release). Further tracks will be issued later this year, before a debut album in 2010.

With a penchant for hotel room antics and on tour ‘shenanigans’, BURNS is as far away from your mild-mannered typical studio-tanned boffin as it gets. Born on Halloween 1985, he’s the son of a painter mother and a professional heavyweight boxer father, an upbringing that goes someway in explaining the duality of his music.

On one hand, BURNS unleashes the kind of sonic bursts associated with European stalwarts such as Justice, but stamped with the kind of rave (un)sensibility that could only come from a British upbringing (Glasgow-born, Brighton-based), on the other, his ear for melodic beauty shows he’s the Scottish jetski buzzing in front of Falke and Lindstrom’s maturing yacht house.

This release perfectly captures both sides of the BURNS enigma. ‘Turbo’ has the kind of grimey, rave-inflected bass that has so excited blogs including Big Stereo, Trash Menagerie, Oh! Crapp, and LA Friendly, and earned him the support of DJs ranging from Erol Alkan, A-Trak and DJ Mehdi, to Dubfire and Don Diablo. ‘Heartbeats’ is his seductive love note, complete with a ‘reach for the lasers’ riff writ large across it.

LABEL: 21-12 RECORDS
RELEASED: 20 JULY

To celebrate their tenth year in the business and over 100 releases now firmly under their belt, Audio Therapy thought it high time they celebrated this momentous occasion with ‘This Is Audio Therapy Volume 2’; a collection of some of their finest works, all of which have been deftly remixed by some of today’s finest production talent.

The album is spread across two discs including exclusive full length reworks of classic Audio Therapy tracks from Infusion’s ‘Legacy’ , Habersham’s ‘Dryspell’ and Nick Muir’s ‘G Platz’. Disc 1 is expertly mixed by label head-honcho Dave Seaman, and because Audio Therapy are so damn nice, they have served up a bonus unmixed version with the tracks in their entirety. This release sets out to showcase the wealth and talent of the label’s esteemed catalogue, all of which have been diligently and painstakingly updated by the likes of Funkagenda, Guy J, Robert Babicz, Pig & Dan, Quivver, Charlie May, Gusgus, Glenn Morrison, Eelke Kleijn, Simon & Shaker to name but a few.

The tracklisting over both CD’s is second to none and is bolstered even further by the addition of 2 totally exclusive tracks from Dave Seaman himself, one of which is a collaboration with legendary producer Josh Gabriel and the other being an unreleased remix of his own much lauded single ‘Gobbledygook’.

Dave Seaman says, “We’ve breathed new life into a catalogue we’re very proud of and can only hope that the listening experience matches the enjoyment we had putting the whole project together. It’s been one helluva ride. Here’s to the next ten years. Acid house is dead, long live acid house.”

Along with the double CD release, there will also be a full digital release in bundle and single format as well as a Limited Edition Vinyl run with some of the releases highlights.

Summer 2009 will see Leon Bolier unleash his new compilation album maneuver. After a huge run of gigs, which has seen him take his ‘trance with a twist’ message right around the planet, ‘Streamlined’ presents the ultimate showcase of his highly-sought-after, singularly unique sound. Subtitled ‘Buenos Aires 2009’, the album draws much of its inspiration from Leon’s South American tour, which went off to packed clubs in March of this year.

The double CD, released through Dutch heavyweight Spinnin’, includes an embarrassment of musical riches, including Leon’s brand new killer cuts ‘St Kilda’ ‘Medellin’ and ‘Lunar Diamond’. Also on-board is the forthcoming single ‘This’, which features the striking new vocal talent, Floria Ambra. As with ‘Pictures’, Leon’s 2008 debut artist album, ‘Streamlined’ also brings with it a range of new music from fellow Dutch electronic music talents. Prepare to hear white-hot new & exclusive music from Cliff Coenraad, Joop and Jan Oostdyk! Disc 2 kicks off with ‘Last Light Tonight’, Leon’s already-much-talked-about reteaming with Menno de Jong. It progresses though an arsenal of tracks that Leon will be championing at this summer’s festivals and gigs, including Airbase’s ‘Interfere’, Breakfast’s ‘Remember’ and Kyamoto ‘One Moment Of Thought’.

On completing the mix of ‘Streamlined 2009’, Leon said: A lot happened since I mixed the first CD of the Trancemission series early 2008. I released my first artist album, got featured in the DJ Mag top 100 of 2008 and played more great gigs around the globe. The warmth and enthusiasm that the people attending my gigs showed combined with everything that happened over the past year made me want to release my first solo DJ compilation album, showcasing a deeper sound on the first CD and a more uplifting festival vibe on the second one. I was working on the track list for this CD while I was in Buenos Aires, spending some time between gigs in Latin America. I had an amazing time there, therefore I would like to dedicate this CD to Buenos Aires!
