In Cr2 Records’ Circus Vol. 1 mixed by Yousef, tribal funk and robust soul are brought to the vast and ever-expanding world of house music. The album’s first disc, reminiscent of a romp through OM-style San Francisco house, swings robustly between catchy vocal tracks and purely tribal house without losing the continuity of its rhythm – an admirable feat, given the diversity of the disc’s constituent tracks. Yousef’s “The Road To Medellin,” Zander VT’s “Trying Some More,” Mihalis Safras’ “San Trope (Oxia Remix)” and Basti Grub & Aldo Cadiz’s “Eleccion” pound home repetitive and driving vocal innuendos. All the while, tracks by Pablo Cahn, Santos, Daniel Stefanik and Italoboyz usher in a welcomed injection of hard funk that prevents this particular house excursion from being rightfully classified as another minimal house attempt. Furthermore, nestled amongst the wilder tracks that are sure to have heads bobbing (and, if I’m not misled, feet stomping!) are contemplative tracks that give the disc a pleasing and mellow roundedness. These include Lee Burridge & Matthew Deekay’s “Wongel,” Basti Grub Feat. Basos’ “Ohr Batch Im Kongo” and Nick Curly’s “Aymara.” This drum-driven excursion concludes with Reboot’s “Hermano,” a brazenly castanet-driven mélange of west coast dance and grassroots house. In this reviewer’s opinion, it is a fittingly celebratory finale to a decidedly solid dance album that appears to strive to break new dancing ground – and it does so with wry precision. Disc one of Yousef’s latest, despite its daunting aural variety, may be enjoyed lounging with friends or as a feast for the senses before letting go of oneself to the rhythm of movement; to dance without reservation, in other words. Well worth a listen, if not a purchase.

The second disc is very different from its predecessor; disc two ushers in many familiar names with an array of unfamiliar sounds. Loz’ Remix of Yousef’s “Way Of Life” is a spooky and devilishly tender opener, running xylophone over wooden blocks as water over creek pebbles. “Just Us (Blakdoctor Voice Mix),” mist-laden and full of intrigue, trails behind before segueing into Derrick Carter’s retrospective mix of DJ Q’s “Glasgows Jazz” – thus beginning a succession of snare- and stab-laden dance music that provides the sort of oldskool atmosphere where the only sounds to speak of originate from airy, cautious vinyl records. Johnny D’s “Manipulation” brings back the contemporary to Yousef’s second disc and, stage having thus been set, Gabriel Ananda’s delicious bump-and-grind “Dopplewhipper” swoops and dives through its techy entrails. It is arguably the disc’s most compelling track and should be savored like a piece of red meat. Yousef reaches back to some of 2008’s most famous with the inclusion of classics such as Guy J’s remix of Sasha’s “Mongoose,” Carl Craig’s rework of Faze Action’s “In The Trees” and Dubfire’s rendition of Radio Slave’s “Grindhouse.” The latter half of Yousef’s mix follows a similarly minimalistic path, representing a stark divergence from the uppity west coast house vibe of the first disc. Yousef then re-infuses his second mix with smooth, swinging jazz-house by the likes of Tim Deluxe and “Come Home,” one of Yousef’s very own. ‘Cameras ready, prepare to flash!’ breaks the artificial silence: Green Velvet’s classic track “Flash,” naughtily remixed by Danny Tenaglia himself, rips through the aforementioned placidity with a tribalistic funk to match the aura of the DJ behind Cr2’s Circus Vol. 1, stapling firmly into place an otherwise otherworldly collection of music that (in any other DJ’s hands) would seem mismatched and uncharacteristically bold.

But that is, perhaps, the quality which Yousef embodies most successfully with this eclectic release – uncharacteristic boldness. Do the mixes make sense? Scarcely, by convention’s standards. But, in sampling an album mixed by an artist as varied and uncompromising as Yousef, we must ask ourselves: Is it conventionality that we are really after? Chances are that if you dig this album, the answer is a resounding ‘hell no!’ But as the discs together interweave deep house, jazz-fusion, minimal techno and bass-laden soul into a singular driving beast, it ought to be the listener who ultimately decides whether this latest release from Cr2 Records jives or dives.

- James Woodruff

Creamfields have announced more acts to this year’s multi award winning festival including electro pop sensation Uffie who performs Live in the Chibuku Arena, her collaborations with the likes of DJ Feadz brought her to the attention of Ed Banger Records who quickly signed her and has seen her feature on Justice’ † album, a success earned on the internet with over 17 million plays! With her new album ‘Sex Dreams & Denim Jeans’ released on Monday 14th June featuring a collaboration with Pharrell Williams we can expect big things from Uffie.

After smashing it last year, Creamfields are pleased to announce the return of the Go Dutch Arena which features a line up from some of Dutchland’s biggest exports from across the dance music spectrum including Electro House duo Bingo Players, Hardwell, Oliver Twizt, Jaimie Fanatic, Sandro Silva, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Mighty Fools, DJ Rockid, Boemklatsch, the arena will be hosted by Drum & Bass MC Dan Stezon.

Other acts just added to the line up include Cocoon regular André Galluzzi whose fans include the likes of Sven Väth & Richie Hawtin he joins the bill in the Mixmag Presents Cocoon Arena on Sunday 29th August. Another new addition is UNION, who are head honcho’s of the UK’s biggest student after-hours parties, which has become the melting pot for a new sound that is truly exciting and unique. Students and muso press have named it Crunkstep – a scene that’s about mixing what’s clever and great about underground dance music with an energy that rocks the roof off the peak time dancefloor. UNION have taken up their own monthly night at Fabric and rocked stages from Miami to Ibiza and back. Already tipped by Mixmag as ‘ones to watch’ – the futures looking exciting for these young guns and their 25th century sound and we are delighted to welcome them for their debut Creamfields performance.

Back by demand is the Soonnights & Filth Ice’d Cream Van. But don’t be deceived by its appearance as this converted Ice Cream van is a pro DJ Booth on wheels complete with its own meaty sound system! Attracting a huge gathering last year of festival goers wanting to enjoy some alfresco disco, this year they bring a line up of underground house and techno experts who will be tailoring their selections to match what will hopefully be a blazing hot weekend, line up includes Danny Savage, Luke Pompey, Chris Special, Filth & Splendour to name a few, all of whom are used to rocking clubs like Sankeys, Ministry Of Sound or their home at the Mint Club in Leeds.

Creamfields returns to Daresbury, Cheshire on August Bank Holiday weekend with a mouthwatering line up that includes the likes of David Guetta, Tiësto, Deadmau5, Leftfield, Calvin Harris, Paul van Dyk, Swedish House Mafia, Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman, Sven Väth, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Eddie Halliwell, Eric Prydz and more.

We are excited to reveal full details about the unstoppable Luciano who has chosen Creamfields to make his UK debut for his ‘Luciano Presents Æther’ Live project. Chilean born and Switzerland based Luciano is an accomplished musician in his own right, having conquered dancefloors over the last 15 years with his own unique sound. This year he unveils his exciting new project set to blow your senses and your mind.

Synchronising sound and colour to create a conceptual and groundbreaking show this highly anticipated performance is set to change your understanding of music forever. Now here’s for the science bit, Luciano is the conductor, orchestrating 5 musicians from the Cadenza label: Reboot, Mirko Loko, Gregrory Poncet, LVD and Laurent. Each musician playing seperate instruments from Ableton Live and joined by live percussionist Omri Hason. Each instrument will be assigned a colour from the light spectrum whilst visual accompaniment will be provided by Todd Graft and Ben Loki from Microchunk.

Commenting on the project Luciano said: “It’s all about dance music and club music and the evolution of it! It’s very tribal and there’s a lot of space for jamming … There are musicians on stage and new sounds but it’s all about dance music. Im so excited to launch my Ǽther live concept in the UK at such a wonderful festival as Creamfields”.

This visionary concept is based on technology and the senses and has taken over 4 years to create. Favoured for his definitive DJ sets, this performance will see him return to his sonic laptop for what promises to be an unforgettable Creamfields performance.

Luciano Presents Ǽther Live at Creamfields on Saturday 29th August Bank Holiday Weekend performing alongside Tiesto, Basement Jaxx, Paul van Dyk, Dizzee Rascal, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Mylo Live, 2mandjs Live to name a few.

‘A Collection of Scars & Situations’ is the debut artist album from Liverpool’s likeliest lad of dance, Yousef. As a globetrotting DJ of over ten years Yousef has ignited the world over, first with his famous residency at Cream and now his own internationally acclaimed promotion Circus, a monthly gathering of the who’s who of modern electronic music. This album sees Yousef finally lay down on wax a watermark of his effervescent personality, showcasing the different dynamics to his sound as a performer alongside material more reflective of the man away from the booth.

So what for the stuff you already know? Well the slew of singles that marked the early signs of the album have continued to create a fervent level of interest from the glitterati of house and techno DJs. Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, Nick Curly, Nic Fanciuilli, James Zabiela and John Digweed are all impassioned Yousef supporters. Present and correct is the acid fuelled nightmare ‘Letter to No One’, alongside the snaking funk of ‘In Parliament’.

Elsewhere there’s some gloriously ebullient freshness in the brand new club bangers. ‘I Suggest’ boasts some gloriously frenetic percussion, jettisoning an illegible vocal against the clunking tribal drums. ‘Equilibrium’ comes on hard as a modern powerhouse of cold clinical techno, whilst ‘Fun Whore’ resonates with the electronic tomfoolery that epitomises Circus, a slab of wild carnival techno. And ‘Anti Hero’ stands as a melodic snapshot of main room intensity; layering futuristic effects over a section of gentle Detroit inspired chords and arpeggiated synths. It’s blissful abandon and marks the ray of sunshine bursting through the album’s predominantly dark outlook.

There’s also efforts made to strike beyond the club arena, taking the album out of a DJ led tour de force and into the realms of that murky district often labelled as ‘proper’. But rather than some tacked on beatless numbers working as an after thought, Yousef’s efforts compliment the sound he’s crafted with ease. The haunting space that emanates on ‘Birthday Thoughts’ adds a black undercurrent to the hedonism that ripples through the rest of the release, whilst ‘A Moment of Clarity’ has a warmer effect with its focus on melody. Yet this is done with the track grimacing through a bleak outlook, marrying a melancholy breakdown with sharp and gritty drums to create an UNKLE esque vibe.

Like every release there’s a story behind the fabric of what Yousef has tried to do, nowhere better illustrated than on ‘Africa’. A holiday in Gambia this year was supposed to be a period of relaxation and escape from the grind of musical solidity that defines the daily life of Yousef, but instead one impromptu session saw a jam with three musicians build the parts from which this dreamy yet powerful groove originated.

That’s not the only collaboration. The superb ‘Legacy’ has none other than jacking house doyen Derrick Carter on vocal duties, his presence adding a weighty edge to an already superb piece of music. Perfectly redolent of the fizzing energy that characterised the American sounds that fed his initial artistic inspiration in the mid nineties, it still sounds like a twenty first century tech house master class, serving as arguably the standout of the release.

And as for the album’s legacy as a whole? It encapsulates everything that is Yousef in 2009, skull crushing techno alongside hip shaking house grooves and moments of melancholy reflection bursting out of the madness. It’s reflective of the times we live in, dripping with hope, paranoia and hedonistic allure. Beyond the man, this is twenty first century electronica in full technicolour.

SO… club opens Saturday 4th October
SO…what are you waiting for?

Today brings great news for Liverpool’s underground dance music lovers as new club, SO announces it will open its doors on Saturday 4th October. Continuing in the long tradition of being one of the UK’s most elite underground scenes for House and Techno, Club So will see the likes of D Ramirez, Format B, Skylark’s Andy Chatterly, Jason Bye, Ketoloco, The Rejekts, Tom Neville, OD Musique, Kate Lawler and The Evil Amigos all entertain an educated yet up for it crowd in the opening month.

The club itself is set inside an Old Georgian building and is steeped in tradition. During the mid 19th century it was used as a living residence of former Prime Minister William Gladstone. Set over 3 levels, the Basement is the main room of the club and holds 700 people in comfort with a turbo sound system, intelligent lighting and air conditioning. Upstairs is the Attic which acts as the 2nd room and continues the underground feel to the venue with low ceilings and exposed brickwork for that stripped back minimal vibe. Above this room is the Social and Roof Terrace which act as a place for people to catch their breath from the shenanigans downstairs. All this makes for the perfect setting for putting on the very best musical soundtrack supplied by some of the finest pioneers in house, techno, minimal and electro the UK has to offer.

Neil James the brainchild behind the SO concept and also the clubs promoter says, “ Club So will encapsulate the whole ethos of underground dance music bringing you a varied line up of headlining DJ’s and the hottest producers on the circuit each and every week.’

Situated on Duke St at the heart of Liverpool’s clubland, SO will host some of the biggest names each and every week. Saturday nights will be completely distinctive in style and format from any other night in Liverpool and with diverse DJ line ups planned it won’t be long before Club So becomes the must attend venue for the city and beyond.

It’s only 6 weeks to go until this Summer’s hottest festival Creamfields, and the team behind the UK’s No.1 Dance festival are pleased to announce more acts to the allstar line up.

Stepping out from the decks of this summer’s best parties, new DJ additions include Mark Brown (CR2 Records) playing the Radio 1 Arena. Mark Brown has his fingers in many party pies, currently remixing for St Etienne and Duran Duran and securing himself a slot on BBC Radio 1 standing in for Pete Tong in August. Also on board is Drum and Bass maestro Futurebound added to the Ape Arena and Sonny J (Liverpool’s latest export) in the Skins arena. Sonny J is currently tearing up dancefloors nationwide with his debut album ‘Disastro’, big basslines and euphoric strings define this showstopping record, another gem glistening on the North West dance scene. Ministry of Sound resident Dom Chung will also be hitting the decks in Chibuku, the hottest superclub to emerge from Liverpool in recent years.

Following on from the incredible success of the Residents Bar last year, Creamfields 08 has stepped up another level and introduces more summer magic with the all-new Residents Terrace; an open-air ‘Buena-vista’ of international club culture. Debuting last year and becoming one of the most popular spots on site due to this being the arena that’s dedicated to the residents, those unsung heroes who rock dancefloors across the UK every week.

Always at the frontier of dynamic dance festivals, Creamfields reveal another move that sets them apart as the UK’s freshest festival by leaps and bounds – coinciding with this years World Environmental Day on 5th June. Having already released one of the freshest festival line ups of the summer including Kasabian, Fatboy Slim, Ian Brown, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto and Underworld, Creamfields will also be doing their bit for the environment.

For the first time the festival has teamed up with Liftshare.com, a company whose aim is to make people aware and travel efficient. This partnership will help cut car emissions by introducing friendly festival-goers to each other online before the event so they can share car journeys and make friends early and save money in the process!

Ali Clabburn of liftshare.com says: “Festival-goers have long cared about the environment, and love the idea of car-sharing to get there. It saves money, cuts congestion and reduces your CO2 emissions – so it’s win-win for everybody. “Its’s great to be working with Creamfields to bring their festival-goers a greener way of getting there. It costs nothing to join and just means the fun can start even earlier as they find new friends to share the journey with!”

Creamfields celebrates 10 years as the UK’s #1 dance festival, whose expertise and experience has led to creating the highest quality events with the most up-for-it crowds. With a reputation as one of the friendliest festivals on the circuit, Creamfields has unveiled plans to get festival goers environmentally involved and creative whilst enjoying a fantastic festival weekend.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, festival goers are being encouraged to dress up, be it fancy dress, prom dresses, top hat and tails or, and here’s the fun bit, home made outfits made from recycled clothes. Those lycra shorts, green wigs, tutus and platform shoes all have a place in the ‘Fields – here’s your chance to parade them one last time! After enjoying the sight of everyone being suitably silly Creamfields will be providing containers for you to throw the old outfits into which will be donated to Oxfam at the end.

Creamfields will also be donating any tents that get left behind to charity. The ‘tent donation station’ will be put to good use, with any tents left behind from the event sent to parts of the world where they are needed most to provide shelter.

As well as encouraging people to make use of the recycling bins around the site, The Residents Bar, that will be home to the unsung heroes of clubland is also making its ‘green’ contribution, with an arena made out of sustainable materials and runs on a biomass generator and wind turbines that guarantees great times and no waste.

Other initiatives include;

•	Providing festival goers with recycling bags to use in the campsites
•	Solar Powered beach huts and pod pads for luxury accomadation in Boutique camping
•	Pump Powered taps to minimise water wastage
•	Providing water waste containers so contaminated water is not poured on the floor
•	Traders using recycling and biodegradable bin bags
•	Food and drink stands using biodegradable or re-usable plates and cups
•	All waste to be separated and recycled off site

Creamfields are delighted to announce our initiatives on World Environment Day. Global celebrations of this day include street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, tree planting and more. Creamfields are at the forefront of groundbreaking events and the breathtaking festival site in Daresbury, Cheshire is set for a stunning weekend for August Bank Holiday.
