There’s a crack team of electronic musicians on board the Thursday night altruistic rave vessel: not least living legend RADIOACTIVEMAN touching down for an electro session whilst 303-abuse pair TUDOR ACID, late addition THE DOUBTFUL GUEST and mystery live guest DJ EARWAX are gonna turn the tempo up and get sweaty. SCHEME BOY is in effect to bombard, pummel and amaze and The Centrifuge’s latest signing VAETXH showcases his mind-melting bass/glitch fusion. Your DJ team for the evening are null+void blog lady KIERSTY and The Centrifuge’s resident misanthrope MISSAW.

After six and a half years of incredible music, outrageously good times and spectacular memories, T BAR has decided to finally close its doors for good. The decision is a result of a change of heart, change of climate and a need by those involved to move forward in a different and fresh direction.

The love and support that T Bar has received over the years from some of the most high caliber DJs, fans and music lovers has meant it has become firmly established as one of East London’s most admired institutions for quality dance music. Initially starting out in the Tea Building on Shoreditch High Street, during its reign it hosted some of the most talked about parties in London and beyond such as Wrong Meeting, Stink, Dig Your Own Rave and Kubicle and welcomed the likes of Michael Mayer, Jamie Jones and Andrew Weatherall. For six years T Bar strived to showcase a unique and vast army of talent and all without charging for admission.

T BAR’s move last year to Houndsditch enabled new opportunities to broaden their musical spectrum, introduce new nights and residencies and secure rare performances from more high profile acts such as Groove Armada, Riva Starr, DJ Pierre and Marshall Jefferson. This partnered with a change in London’s climate led to a change in pricing policy earlier this year.

Sadly London’s recovery was not as speedy as all had hoped and T BAR’s goodbye comes amidst the sad demise of other well respected venues around London, which makes it all the more hard to swallow. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who spent time to make T Bar what it was and cementing it firmly in the hearts and minds of so many people across the globe.

As anticipation builds for the August Bank Holiday beats bonanza that is the L.E.D Festival, the team behind the event is set to announce a brand new arena headlined by two of Sweden’s biggest exports Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso as well as some more choice new additions who will be joining the likes of David Guetta, Leftfield, Soulwax, Goldfrapp, Calvin Harris and Aphex Twin to name a few.

One of the world’s biggest clubbing institutions Cream will be hosting their own arena on Friday 27th August and bringing with them an array of dance music heavyweights. First up we have Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, fresh off the back of two sell out shows at the legendary Brixton Academy. Renowned for delivering spectacular stage shows, festival goers can expect a wagon load of production and special effects for an awe inspiring show.

Axwell will be lighting up London with his ‘Heart’ Show performance. Devised, designed and built in Sweden, Axwell’s spectacular LED ‘Heart’ based around his logo stands at a gargantuan 6m high & 5m wide, the aluminium frame contains LED lamps whilst the inside is able to project visuals synced with Axwell’s specially composed tracks with the ‘Heart’ in mind.
Axwell debuted the ‘Heart’ 10,000 miles across the globe at the Stereosonic tour of festivals in Australia with fans videos posted online immediately captivating fans and the media alike. Exclusively for Axwell’s festival appearances, this will be the 1st time his loyal devotees in London will experience the must see ‘Heart’ surrounded by leafy Victoria Park juxtaposed urban East London and is set to be a show to remember.

Axwell says: “I want to bring something to the table, and give something back to the fans that give me so much love at my parties. They are the ones that allow me to continue to do what I love. Music.”

We can also announce another London festival exclusive from Sebastian Ingrosso who joins the bill performing in the Cream Arena.

Another act to join the ever growing line up is Afrojack, one of the world’s hottest breakthrough electro artistes whose fans include the likes of L.E.D headliner David Guetta, Tommie Sunshine, Calvin Harris, Lil Jon and Tiesto. He will be showcasing the mixing manoeuvres that have been getting the clubbing world hot under the collar. Other new additions include Kim Fai whose surefire floor fillers are already causing a stir worldwide, rising star AN21 – Steve Angello’s younger brother, no less – continues the Swedish flavour whilst sometime AN21 remix partner Max Vangeli adds a touch of San Francisco style to complete the line-up.

Adding their weight to Saturday 28th August’s bill which already includes Leftfield’s first hometown show in more than a decade, Goldfrapp, Friendly Fires and a rare appearance from special guest Aphex Twin, will be South African sensations Die Antwoord. Famed for their ‘Enter The Ninja’ video that swept across the world in a blaze of ‘interweb’ glory earlier this year, Die Antwoord are a self-styled Zef-rap phenomenon. Plying their synth heavy riffs the genre-busting trio of Ninja, Yo-landi Vi$$ser and DJ Hi-Tek are set to take things to the next level with their stunning slang heavy flows and concrete beats.

With further announcements to come keep checking www.ledfestival.net for more information.

Over the course of a decade and more than 100 releases, VANDIT Records has become a landmark imprint.

This summer, that milestone will be aptly celebrated with the 3 CD release, ’10 Years of VANDIT’. Mixed by Paul van Dyk – both the label’s original mastermind and prime mover – it will document the tracks that have helped make the label a part of trance music’s bedrock. The discs will cover the label’s most influential output from 2000 to 2010, with the latter featuring a new Paul van Dyk single, created specifically to mark the anniversary.

VANDIT are also looking to EDM fans themselves to choose their own highlights. In April they will launch a special online event where label devotees can select their top 10 all-time favourites from the catalogue, these will then be compiled into a consummate ’10 Years Of…’ Top 10 chart. Every voter has the chance to preview the new PvD single at this very early stage and one lucky participant will also win a highly desirable (and completely unique) VANDIT competition prize.

These events will beat the drum for what will be a VANDIT-dominated spring & summer clubbing season; a series of electrifying parties that will roll out across mainland Europe, the Balearics & the US. In March, Paul kicked off the celebrations with a pair of 10 Years events at the Miami Winter Music Conference. On the 26th and 27th of March he brought VANDIT’s key artists to Miami to play 2 consecutive nights at Club Space. This summer, to mark the release of the of the album itself, there will be another deuce of events with Paul playing a hometown Berlin gig on the 29th May followed by London’s Brixton Academy on 30th May. All his Cream Ibiza nights will also come under the same banner, and saving the biggest till last, he will host a colossal night at Berlin’s O2 Arena in September 2010.

For tickets to the Brixton, London gig click here.

THE CHANCE OF A LIFETIME!

ENTER OUR CONTEST TO BE THE OPENING DJ AT ONE OF PAUL VAN DYK’S “10 YEARS OF VANDIT RECORDS” CELEBRATION PARTIES IN BERLIN AND BRIXTON, LONDON.

Paul van Dyk has invited aspiring DJs and producers to submit a 30-minute DJ mix showing of their mixing and DJing talents. The winner of the competition will serve as the opening DJ at Astra Berlin May 29th or Brixton Academy, May 30th! There’s a limit of one entry per DJ and the mix must focus on the electronic/dance genre. The deadline to submit the mix is Saturday, May 22nd; winners will be notified by e-mail Thursday, May 27th. This once-in-a-lifetime is open to all aspiring DJs/producers. Expose yourself! Be in the spotlight of attention! To take part on the competitions, please use one of the following links for the event microsites.

THE BIG CHILL PRESENTS a monthly flagship event at THE BIG CHILL HOUSE in KINGS CROSS, LDN focused on bringing you some of the biggest and most exciting names in music. This month we are hitting spring so thought after a long hard winter we would give you something totally TROPICAL!

Taking the lead role we have RADIOCLIT; the British DJ/production duo, Johan Karlberg and Etienne Tron, who call their brand of African beat-driven house ‘ghettopop’. They began in 2005 with their residency at the Old Blue Last. Whether it was DAVID BANNER slamming through the crowd, SINDEN or DIPLO blowing up the spot, they were alerting London to some of the heaviest talent to emerge for a long time. Together with SWITCH, M.I.A, BURAKA SOM SISTEMA, BONDE DO ROLE, ED BANGER and INSTITUBES, there’s now a fervently innovative worldwide scene with arms linked, with Radioclit playing an essential part of that chain. RADIOCLIT further cemented their name within the afro-beat ‘ghettopop’ sound collaborating with acclaimed African vocalist ESAU MWAMWAYA on THE VERY BEST we are incredibly excited to welcome this duo to the BIG CHILL PRESENTS!

DOC DANEEKA is second on the bill. A fast-rising star, The DOC has just had his latest single DRUMS IN THE DEEP featured on FABRIC’S ELEVATOR MUSIC VOL 1 earmarking him for very big things. Add to this killer remixes of DELPHIC and DIGITAL MYSTIKZ and the fact his remix edit of GATTO VIOLA made GILLES PETERSON’s 2009 winners list, we’re very proud to be getting this man down!

Supporting we have three of London’s most exciting new talents, first up 23-year-old Londoner GREENA is the new master of genre busting! Putting another spin on house he sails through vintage techno, ghettotech, upfront house, and even some grime-flavored R&B. Next up South Londoner Philip aka GIRL UNIT creates perfect Tropical house, there for he is the perfect pea for this pod. He has been taken under the wing of the NIGHT SLUGS label so expect to hear a lot more from this man soon! Rounding up the line up we have OLIVER RANT formerly one half of the duo Crystal Death Oliver has gone solo with an old school rave slant on everything from electro house and tech step.

This event will be FREE BEFORE 10pm, £5 AFTER. GET THERE EARLY!

Renaissance Cable residence returns March 27th…

Renaissance touch back down at their new London home for a Spring extravaganza that takes in talent from the opposite ends of our spectrum – the return of a long-standing favourite and the London debut (for us) of a highly-respected, fast-rising genius…

Flying in for his first London show of 2010 is the Japanese-by-way-of-New York legend Satoshi Tomiie. Since the early nineties Satoshi has blazed a contemporary path through dance. From the collaboration with Knuckles on ‘Your Love’ via seminal tracks such as ‘Love In Traffic’ and ‘Virus’ or remixing the likes of Papua New Guinea and Kosheen, his production has always been one step ahead of the curve. Factor in compilations on Global Underground, his own SAW label and, of course, Renaissance and you have one of the richest CV’s in dance. Don’t miss this opportunity to catch a true legend at work.

Dropping in alongside Satoshi is a man with an equally accomplished pedigree – Paul Woolford, down to celebrate the launch of his Renaissance compilation, Platform. Renowned for his We Love residence at Space, Ibiza, the seminal ‘Erotic Discourse’ and remixing the likes of Depeche Mode, Simian Mobile Disco and current band du jour, Delphic, Woolie’s a dance maverick who will provide the perfect foil to Satoshi.

With further support coming from production maestro Jim Rivers, The Warehouse Project’s Greg Lord, Roo and resident Marcus James, the musical stage is well and truly set.

Finally, clubbers will surely delight in the return of the special ‘Deluxe’ advance ticket, which for a bargainous £18.50 provides guaranteed admission and a copy of Paul’s Platform.

[ONLY LONDON APPEARANCE OF 2010]

As the world’s undisputed no.1 DJ it’s a great honour to announce that Armin van Buuren has chosen South West Four for his only London gig of 2010. Armin follows in the footsteps of Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Sasha and John Digweed by headlining South West Four for the very first time.

Not only has Armin officially been voted the most popular DJ on the planet for the past three years, A State Of Trance continues to set the standard as the world’s most popular radio show. It now appears on a remarkable forty worldwide FM stations and attracts more than thirty million listeners a week. His record label Armada Music is now one of the premier labels in dance music, whilst Armin’s remixes of The Killers and BT sell by the lorry load. This is all achieved whilst Armin tours the four corners of the globe headlining the world’s leading nightclubs and festivals, holding down an epic weekly summer residency at Amnesia Ibiza and regularly playing ‘Armin Only’ gigs to over 10,000 fans. Currently working on a new album which will be showcased at SW4, this will be the first time he has headlined a festival in the UK. A true landmark gig for Armin, this will be a guaranteed pilgrimage for any trance lover.

SUNDAY

[ONLY LONDON APPEARANCE OF 2010]

With SW4 extending across two unforgettable days in 2010, we needed an act that had been there, seen it and done it all to headline the Sunday night. To use one of dance music’s most loved cliché’s we needed an act who needs no introduction. And for us there was only one contender. That man is Fatboy Slim.

As one of the most consistent songwriters of the modern era, not to mention one of the very best remixers in the business and one of the most popular DJs of all time, Fatboy Slim is the big man for the big occasion. From DJing infront of 250,000 people on Brighton Beach and at the Rio Carnival, through to headlining the world’s leading festivals and selling out concert venues the world over, Fatboy Slim’s DJ sets are the stuff of legend. With an astounding ability to connect with thousands of people in one instant, Fatboy Slim is the ultimate performer that we are truly privileged to welcome to SW4 for his only London appearance of 2010.

MORE HUGE NAMES FOR SW4 COMING SOON!

Hot on the heels of the news that Armin van Buuren and Fatboy Slim are to headline the first ever South West Four Weekender will be the full additions to the lineup in the coming weeks. Weekend Early Bird tickets are on sale on Tuesday 23rd February at 9am priced just £72.50 + booking fee with Saturday and Sunday Early Bird tickets only £37.50 + booking fee. Do not miss it!!

The life of a true music lover is a divine mixture of beauty and obsession, dedication and impulse; and there are very few who can be fairly categorised as a true music lover more than Thomas Koch, aka DJ T. His list of accolades and contributions to electronic music are irrefutable, indelible and seemingly endless. There’s his editing and publishing work in the periodical world: founding Groove Magazine in 1989 and remaining its publisher and author for 15 years (Groove remains one of the longest running – 20 years and counting – and most respected dance music periodicals in the world). There were his projects with other likeminded souls: co-founding the legendary Monza club night in 1999 (now an Ibiza landmark) with close friend Patrik Dechent; and co-founding the triumphant Get Physical imprint with M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade in 2002, which has grown to be one of the most forward-thinking, consistent and flourishing labels on the electronic map. And that’s not forgetting his artistic contributions to the hungry music world; from his imagination-travelling productions (especially last year’s critically cheered album, The Inner Jukebox’) to his smooth DJ sets that shimmy around the globe with an incessant run of tour dates.

Growing up in a family of musicians in Dusseldorf and Frankfurt, T. was constantly surrounded by music – with “a varied mix of classical music, German pop, chart hits, rock and soul” as his soundtrack. It was as a young teenager, however, that he found his true calling: “All of a sudden, I lived in these two parallel worlds, alternating between mainstream chart pop and my own personal obsession, a love I could share with none of my school buddies, black music. At 13, I discovered break-dance; funk, soul, hip-hop, old school electro and Miami bass became the soundtrack to my heavily dance-influenced life. I had my first brush with electronic music in 1988, in the acid house-drenched summer of love, when Sven Väth opened Frankfurt’s seminal club Omen and kicked off a previously unknown flood of euphoria and get-up-and-go spirit in the local club scene. I fell for this sound straight away; hip-hop and broken beats were relegated to the sidelines. The following 15 years, I spent every single weekend on dancefloors.” – DJ T.

From the age of 16 onwards, T. accidentally fell into a prestigious career as a DJ – by 19, he was DJing 6+ hour sets to 1,500 punters. It’s no wonder that his own productions mirror the dancefloor experience into a headphone journey so effortlessly – he has an understanding of the dancefloor that’s impossible to top. And it’s one that he enjoys to no end.

“Over the last two years or so, the DJ scene has gone through a huge generational shift. All around me, long-standing DJ veterans are starting to lose interest in spinning their stuff or simply don’t feel involved enough anymore to continue with this full-on rigmarole, including the latest batch of related requirements like internet visibility or the digital revolution, to name but a few. Many of the old guard simply can’t or don’t want to keep up with the change. I, for one, feel like I’m on a massive high and I owe a lot of that to the great success of my last tour. Right now, I love DJing more than ever and there is so much fantastic new music to be discovered that I often find myself wondering which of these gems I should play first…and that’s something I hadn’t experienced in a long while. A lot has changed in DJ and club culture, and certainly not all of it for the better, but I still manage to find enough that is good and beautiful and that inspires me to carry on.” – DJ T.

fabric 51: DJ T.’ serves as an unforgettable introduction to one of his astonishing DJ sets, a lively adventure full of sharp twists and unexpected turns. Deep, elegant and swelling, the mix transcends listeners to otherworldly soundscapes with a fantastically diverse ambience – at times sunny and bright, other times wild and mystifying, and always keeping a psychedelic and cinematic feel throughout. Featuring the off-beat spontaneity of dOP, the Latin infused bounce of Matias Aguayo, the percussive retreats of Bodycode – and plenty of hidden gems in-between – fabric 51 is a joy of a listen, a daydream-fuelling hideaway where each track is crammed with as many soul-fuelled moments and intricate charms as the next.

“This mix is definitely drenched in the spirit and musical vibe of my recent global tour. Right now, I am digging up all my musical roots – disco, soul, funk, early house and plenty of vocals. I play more vocal tracks than I have touched in ages and I don’t think I have ever whipped up a mix with so many vocals, either! While I usually mix from a more “functional” DJ perspective, this mix is the product of my current super-positive emotional state and definitely not your average dancefloor fodder – at least half of these tracks would never find their way into my DJ bag. Aesthetically speaking, it is more of a shimmering, sparkling disco funk concoction, a nod to the old school, but also 100 per cent in the here and now!” – DJ T.

Buraka Som Sistema have always liked throwing curveballs. From their first DJ residencies, where off-the-cuff sets were “pretty much rehearsed live… mixing for people at raves, that was our practice – kinda like shock therapy” to incorporating unusual material into their songs – recording shattering glass, or throwing an orange at the wall and using the sound as a snare. Even their first drum & bass collective, Fusion Lab, had a reputation for mixing things up: “it wasn’t all about drum & bass, it was all about experimenting with crazy beats.” So it was hardly surprising that some years ago, on a whim, they ended up playing around with an obscure mid-90s genre like kuduro.

“We bought this kuduro compilation and there were so many amazing ideas! Nothing was valid as a whole song, but the ideas, the loops, were amazing. The genre exploded in popularity at the beginning, then it went back to being something left field that producers were trying to develop; artists were exploring the possibilities, sampling really crazy things – and coming up with something people had never heard before. We just got a bunch of tracks and decided we need to do something with this.” – Buraka Som Sistema

Buraka’s sound is the result of a thoroughly modern post colonial cultural exchange between Portugal and Angola, a former Portuguese colony. It started out as kids trying to make techno music in Africa on old analogue equipment. By the time it hit Lisbon, European dance music had been added to the mix and things were set to go off. After working on a few genre-smashing kuduro re-edits, Buraka kicked off the night from which they later took their name. It was a sweating, heaving party that embodied the spirit of everything a club night should be. Raw and unadulterated, it was instantly recognisable as a landmark event, generating a tangible thrill of something special and new coming together.

“By the second night there was already a huge hype around the whole thing; we were on the cover of a newspaper, turned away 200 people at the door… it was crazy! There was a small stage in front of us and people just kept on coming up, dancing, grinding and doing all kinds of stuff. It was so hot, my laptop kept on crashing – a proper sweatbox. We did like four or five of those and then the club got shut down. We were stuck with this brilliant idea… this sound that everyone wanted to dance to, so we decided to run with it.” – Buraka Som Sistema

From here and through the internet, Buraka’s sound took on a life of its own. The guys got started during the “golden age of Myspace”, and in no time, the likes of Diplo and Sinden were loudly championing the cause. “Things just started happening, the right things happening at the right moment. A couple of months later MIA was calling us to work together and since then we haven’t stopped.” Their first fabric show followed soon after, and Buraka Som Sistema laid their cards on the table with a manic, rambunctious, unhinged live show for which they’ve become best known. “The album was everything we had wanted it to be but the live gigs are very fun, very explosive and very intense.” All that said, behind the live drumming, the dancing troupes and the stage invasions, the core of Buraka’s live show is still as simple and as devastatingly effective as that first club night in a small sweatbox in Lisbon.

And after a year of touring their debut album ‘Black Diamond’, the guys are taking things back to the beginning. FABRICLIVE 49 recaptures the same explosive dynamism, and ebullient enthusiasm of those original Buraka Som Sistema parties in Lisbon on disc; a vibrant reminder of the idea behind the name of the group – Buraka Sound System. Their FABRICLIVE CD encapsulates Buraka’s love for the lost art of the remix album, with a stackful of re-rubs of their own records, putting the emphasis on talent over big names (including versions from L-Vis 1990, Stenchman and A1 Bassline, for instance). Interestingly, what has become clear to Buraka over the last few years is the impact kuduro has had on club music the world over, with more and more sounds beginning to resemble, or show signs of the influence of, kuduro itself.

“A mix CD is at the core of what Buraka was about at the beginning. It’s like going back to the roots. At the same time, it’s very exciting to be out there doing different music and influencing different sounds. A lot of artists, like some dubstep artists and even some UK funky are picking up on the sound, and that’s amazing. That’s something that we are really happy to be part of. We also wanted to avoid making a compilation of 20 club bangers that two months from now are going to be totally forgotten and people are going to be totally sick of them because they’ve heard it in the club so many times already. We also wanted to have a lot of our fresh material on there. And thirdly, we wanted to achieve a kind of flow where there are moments in the mix for you to relax, like Zomby’s track.” – Buraka Som Sistema

London clubbing institution Need2Soul bring you the utterly killer combo of Âme, Marcus Worgull and Linkwood & House of Traps.

December 5th, 10pm – 6am
£10 adv tickets from www.ticketweb.co.uk / £12 on the door
the CAMP (City Arts & Music Project)
70 – 74 City Rd, London, EC1Y 2BJ

Following their daring, roving location policy, so far taking in the cavernous Brixton Academy, an intimate Stoke Newington basement, a stunning Shoreditch loft and many more, the next Need2Soul goes down at the new venue on everyone’s lips – the CAMP (City Arts & Music Project). Expect a very fine soundsystem and a care and quality-infused environment, tailor made for underground fun.

Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann AKA Âme shot to worldwide fame with the utterly unique leftfield house anthem ‘Rej’ and have since graced the world’s best festivals, clubs and labels with their modern take on the classic house/techno/soul axis. Anyone who’s been ‘party’ to their perfectly-pitched sets or heard one of the many acclaimed mix CDs will attest that an Âme gig is not to be missed. And for anyone who foolishly hasn’t had the pleasure – now’s your chance. Expect to find them on a par with (or surpassing) their influences, which include luminaries Moodymann, Masters At Work, Blaze, Morgan Geist and Underground Resistance.

Marcus Worgull started playing piano aged six, played the drums for eight years, was in a school band, sung in a choir and has been partying since he was fourteen. Worgull spent a large chunk of his youth in the renowned German record store Groove Attack, regularly imbibing rare soul, jazz, hip-hop and house, and now owns the store, currently based in Cologne. To this day, Worgull finds the time to soak up classics alongside brand new tracks. The quantity and lifelong duration of his musical osmosis then feeds back into his own masterful productions.

Edinburgh-based Firecracker recordings artists Linkwood, plus House Of Traps perfectly encapsulate the Need2Soul sound in 2009/10. Cooking up fresh new flavors from a sickly funky blend of future-retro disco, boogie, deep house, techno plus a general nod to the cosmos, these rising underground stars are quickly moving from recognition into renown and we predict, towards adulation. Trevor Jackson, The Unabombers, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Lindstrom and Recloose amongst others are all fans.
