Justice has never stuck to clearly defined roles. The fashionably thin, intensely Gallic duo of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay manage to both embody and defy stereotypes. They are intense in a well-educated, laconic, smoky Parisian sort of way (“we smoked 30,000 cigarettes making this record,” they said of debut album). Yet their music pops with rainbow colours and kiddie-friendly choruses. Without ever courting the music press they snared the world’s attention by upstaging Kanye West at the MTV Music Awards. The hip hopper’s onstage temper-tantrum ensured their notoriety to an audience that might never have noticed them otherwise. This, too, seemed to slide off their skinny, black-leather-bound shoulders. Justice marched on. From hipster parties in dingy Paris nightclubs, to manic mainstage gigs at Sonar by Night, to international tours with audiences writhing in near-tearful devotion – they’ve done it all.

This makes their arrival at Pure Pacha highly incongruous. Pacha prides itself on sophistication and as much gentility as becomes a discotheque. It isn’t a natural destination for raving teenagers waving white crosses and homemade “Justice” banners. Tonight they are joined by Cassius, completing the French twist on the evening. On the corner, just past the main entrance a group of youngsters is swigging bottled drinks. This is typical behaviour outside other clubs, but at Pacha you almost expect one of the doormen to lumber down and have a word. No one does though. There is plenty of merriment in the warm air, and the kind of good natured jostling that happens in high-spirited queues. Judging by the snippets of conversation running Justice fan base travels well: Italian, Spanish, French and a fair portion of English voices ring out. Everyone is fidgeting to the hint of the kick drum oozing through the dense walls.

By the time we scramble inside there is a mini rush for the dancefloor. Any latent concerns about how Justice’s cheeky style and flamboyant showmanship will fit in the calm lines of Pacha vanishes in a moment. The booth – always a hive of activity – is a veritable swarm, with enough arms flailing through the dry ice to look as if it’s been taken over by an impatient octopus. Justice and Cassius are playing back to back, moving so fast it seems as if there surely must be more than four of them. On the dancefloor an enthusiastic moil keeps pace with the hyperactive display in the DJ box, swishing and pitching from side to side with giddy abandon. Girls in boutique dresses have bade farewell to propriety and are dancing manically. One, actually around her handbag – ironically, we hope. Justice’s knowing melange of electro, pop (including Janet Jackson!) and the odd stonking guitar riff is perfectly gender balanced: the boys are stomping away with equal concentration. Somehow, they engage the crowd without seeming to pay it much attention. Xavier, small and perky as a meerkat, bobs up from behind the decks to cheer the floor; Gaspard’s most demonstrative moment is a smile and half-wave when someone thrusts a mobile phone up at him, yet they are in perfect harmony with the crowd. The gurgling pop of ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ whips up a storm, and a tough, techno-tinged track gets just as much of a hearty response. Tonight, Justice – with a little help from their friends, Cassius – demonstrates perfectly why the are who they are: every expectation broken, every rule bent and everyone dancing towards dawn with a smile on their face.

Soon you will be back in Ibiza as Resident at Cream @ Amnesia, any new surprises for this summer?
Well, I have my big ‘Best Of’ package, which has just been released with a lot of remixes of some of the classics that will be played. Ibiza is always full of surprises and is always very energetic and very banging and I’m looking forward to it.

You’re performing for Cream @ Amnesia in the main room, which is the most famous dancefloor on the island, why do you think this is? Eg. Is it a combination of music / layout / décor / production / atmosphere etc?
I think that the special thing about Ibiza and even more so about Cream at Amnesia is the fact that people from all different cultural backgrounds come together and have a good time and it doesn’t matter what God you believe in, or what citizenship you have, people are equal, and you have to be tolerant and respectful. It is something that is a very unique thing, having all these people from different places together in one room having a good time.

You’ve been exclusive resident for Cream @ Amnesia for a number of years now, and formed a unique and hugely successful partnership with the clubbing brand? Why do you think it works so well?
Well, as much as I don’t like to see myself as a brand so much, Cream and myself work so well together as first of all, everybody who works at Cream is extremely professional and that leads very often to a successful partnership, and we both appeal to an international crowd, Cream has a following that is global and world wide and I have that too, so when these worlds come together it is even more exciting.

Do you think the vibe of Ibiza has changed over the years?
I’m sure it has, but I have to say I don’t know much about it funny enough, even though I go there every year quite a few times, I’m flying in on Thursday for Cream and I’m flying out Friday morning. So I wouldn’t know so much if the general vibe has changed, all I can say is that the parties on Thursday night are as exciting as they have been!

What’s your favourite track at the moment?
My favourite track of the moment is called ‘Drops of Equator’ by Filo & Perry

What ‘ultimate’ track do you always ensure you carry with you which is guaranteed to make the crowd go off?
Well obviously, whenever I play Fallen Angel, that’s always a sure shot, but one thing in the bag when I’m playing in Ibiza is a track called ‘Dreaming’ I think it is by Ruff Driverz, it has this little Spanish line, and a little Spanish guitar in there but is quite banging too, it always works.

As the Ibiza crowd is so international and eclectic, do you change your sound?
It’s a big holiday destination, and people want to have a good time, so to some extent playing there you can fill the set with some of the big Ibiza classics, for example ‘Greece 2000’. Everybody loves it and when you play it in Ibiza, everyone goes wild, but I wouldn’t necessarily play it in my regular set because, it is a classic and it doesn’t fit, but in Ibiza it will work.

There’s so much technology out there at the moment for DJ’s, what technology do you use when you DJ at Cream? Do you miss Vinyl?
I don’t miss vinyl and I don’t use CDJ’s, I have 2 computer systems with me. One is full with all my material the other one has a lot of software synthesizers installed and I have mini keyboards with me, where I can play a lot of things live, I have a mini controller & I have a custom made mixer.

Does this mean that each set is live and every time that you do them something new is going to happen?
Exactly, for example I could play your favourite track, but it could sound completely different as I would play a different base line, additional hooks to it and different drums, so it would sound so much more intense and fit perfectly into the moment when I play it in my set.

What is the best part about playing the Ibiza season with Cream?
It’s just extremely exciting, a lot of fun and very energetic. It is something that I enjoy, because I am a raver in my head, so if I wasn’t on that side of the mixer I would be down there jumping up and down too, and that’s great.

Last year you celebrated Creamfields 10th Anniversary in style, packing out the Cream Arena, how was the party for you?
It was great, it’s probably the longest on going pure dance festival in the UK.

Will you be bringing us some new tracks off the album during your set?
Absolutely, but I’m also writing music right now for my next album that comes out in 2010, so I will probably play something new as well.

Do you trial your music, before it goes on the album, to see how people react to different tracks?
As I explained before my set up is very interactive, so it’s not that I’m trying whole tracks, but elements of them, like playing a hook line and seeing how the crowd reacts to it live, changing it, building it up and then taking it back to the studio and producing it.

What advice would you give any budding DJ entering the scene at the moment?
Believe in your dreams and do what you like.

You’re one of the few DJ’s who has remained at the top of his game for the last 15 years, what’s the secret of your success?
Well, 2 things. First of all I don’t have any fake image, the person you see and the person you talk to, that is me and the other thing is that on one hand I have a very clear idea about my sound and the music that I like to play but I’m not a snobby arsed DJ, I’m always interacting with the crowd, seeing what’s going on and reacting to it.

Do you go clubbing much socially?
Well, not right now, it’s rather hectic and when I’m home and hanging out with friends, we go and have a beer or eat something.

What 3 acts would sum up your ultimate festival line up? Dead or alive?
Carl Cox, Sasha & I would love to see Shades of Rhythm.

Slightly off the subject, I believe your into horses? Could you tell us about this?
Well it’s more a thing that my wife does very well, she’s an amazing corsage rider and she’s training and doing the most amazing things. Obviously with my life I’m pretty much in the music industry, I know a lot of people there, so pretty much there’s just a few people outside of the music industry, because it is so hectic and so busy, that I know. So through the horse world I have met a lot of very cool people.

So you get a break from talking about music the whole time?
What I really enjoy about it is my wife and the horses, I’m just there, just being ‘normal’.

Pure Pacha Ibiza entered its 7th year in formidable fashion last week with their renowned opening party, which featured Sander Kleinenberg at the helm as new Pure Pacha resident and his special guests, Basement Jaxx.

Sander has been a regular fixture at the Balearic landmark for many years and was joint resident with Axwell last year. After years of playing Pure Pacha, hosting such an artistic show himself and generally smashing it in the club last year, it seemed only right that Sander take the reign and become involved with the music programming and creative art direction of Pure Pacha. Sander is very much involved in the look, feel and projection of Pure Pacha; casting upon his wealth of experience years, encompassing a full 360 appeal. Sander was a natural choice to the people who know the club best – here is what Danny Whittle, head honcho of Pacha Ibiza, had to say:

“Having worked with Sander for many years its fantastic that Sander will be fronting Pure Pacha this summer. He has consistently rocked Pacha every time he plays so it’s great to have that confidence in the quality of music for every Friday night this summer.

With Sander and Basement Jaxx setting the precedent for the upcoming summer, this years guests include Calvin Harris, who is the exclusive monthly resident, Justice, Cassius, Sharam, Faithless, Paul Oakenfold, Trentemoller, Mark Knight and Darren Emerson. Renaissance and Toolroom Knights will each take the reign twice during the summer, while Pacha Brazil, Sharm El Sheikh and Zouk make a special appearance at the club too.

DJs Trevor Nelson and Maxi Jazz make a triumphant comeback in the Global Room and joining them on rotation will be Andy Baxter, Mo Funk and Mucho Muchacho, who are serving the Pacha glitterati with a soundtrack of smooth grooves, soul, funk and upfront R & B.

Built on a reputation for bringing together musical quality, great parties and like minded people, Pure Pacha provides you with the most upfront music, spectacular live pearformances, opulent surroundings and the most beautiful people in town. With so many areas to play in… whether it’s on the dancefloor, chilling on the terrace, grooving in the global room or celeb spotting in the VIP, Pacha caters for all palettes. You really will not get a true Ibizan experience anywhere else.

Electronic music’s premier outfit, Swedish House Mafia, have announced they’ll be taking over Monday’s at Pacha, Ibiza from 22 June. Comprising Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso, SHM will be far bringing their show to the island every week.

The night’s theme, ‘The Dark Forest’, draws on the iconography of North European fantasy, and harks back to the Romanesque parties that gave Ibiza its first taste of pleasure.

Each Monday, Pacha will be transformed into a theatrical playground via a collision of music and bacchanalian spectacle – think fairies, fawns, wolves, transvestites, and animalistic pleasure. Adorned with masks or wearing face paint, the crowd is the party; the DJs are simply the ringmasters. Interaction is a must.

Clubs should be extraordinary, magical places, where the mundane and the everyday are left at the door. Accordingly – though the music is the central element – ‘The Dark Forest’ looks beyond the normal dancefloor experience to create something unique. The newly transformed Pacha, Ibiza is the perfect host, drawing a young, fresh, and cosmopolitan crowd who demand more from their nocturnal pleasures.

Special effects are being shipped in from across the world. Watch out for lasers, fire bursts, and lightening strikes amongst the set design. With visual cues for the decor from ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘The Never Ending Story’, and costume influences from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, The Dark Forest will be unlike any other White Island experience this summer.

Each week, the finest international DJs and live musicians alike will join the Swedish trio, with some very special guests dropping in throughout the season, including Dirty South, Sharam (Deep Dish), Basement Jaxx, Bob Sinclar, Mark Knight, Funkagenda, Kim Fai and An21.

Ibiza’s most iconic club and lifestyle brand Pacha, celebrates over 30 years of success, with their first ever classics album, Pacha Classics.

This deluxe compilation brings you the true sound of Pacha, as it opens its vaults for the first time in its musical history, to create the soundtrack of your summer.

This massive three-disc affair is a time capsule of dance music from the last 20 years fusing Pacha classics with a sprinkling of future classics, cherry picked and mixed by resident DJ, Paul Taylor, who says…

“I’m absolutely honoured to be a part of this project and involved with such a great brand like Pacha. I had a free reign over the track selection and designed the album to include recent classics as well as older iconic tunes to make this a very special collection”

This comprehensive collection will have you recalling some of your finest Pacha moments. Disc One kicks things off with two killer number ones including Spiller ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)’ and Room 5 ft. Oliver Cheatham ‘Make Luv’. Alongside classic tracks from Blaze, Shakedown, Kings Of Tomorrow, Gat Décor & The Source ft. Candi Staton.

Disc two follows up with another excellent selection of Pacha mega anthems such as New Order ‘Blue Monday’, Three Drives ‘Greece 2000’ and Fragma ‘Toca Me’.

As if that wasn’t enough, disc three brings us bang up-to-date with a fine helping of future classics from David Guetta vs The Egg ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go’, Eric Prydz vs Floyd ‘Proper Education’ and Bodyrox ‘Yeah Yeah’.

Throughout the years Pacha has remained a world leader in elegant and debauched partying. And its iconic cherry logo has become a hallmark of glamorous and quality products. Pacha Classics is a testament to that legacy, packed with 59 anthems, 3 number ones, 24 Top 10’s and beautifully packaged in a unique glitter wallet and a super sexy white foil logo emboss.
Pacha Classics is THE heavyweight dance album for Spring 2009.

The label arm of the Pacha Group, Pacha Recordings, inked a five-album deal with New State Entertainment for exclusive Pacha branded compilations in the UK & Eire.

Tim Binns, A&R Director for New State Entertainment, comments, “I’m really excited about working with the Pacha label and brand. It’s an iconic brand with a huge musical history that has grown and extended into many different areas outside music, so the potential is massive”.

The deal will take in TV advertised and non-TV advertised compilations spanning Pacha’s existing music brands, such as Pure Pacha, but also introducing some fresh concepts for 2009 and beyond.

Steve Hulme, International Label Manager/A&R for Pacha Recordings adds, “It feels like a perfect fit for Pacha´s maverick approach to the club world and record business. New State has amazing brands working with them already such as Tiësto, Godskitchen, Cream and Bugged Out and I’m very happy to join Pacha Recordings to that illustrious list. Tim Binns and Tom Parkinson are not afraid to take on projects outside the mainstream. They have a great awareness for the iconic brands they work with and have consistently managed to create success around those brands in the popular consumer market whilst retaining integrity for the brands themselves.”

The first release is scheduled to be a TV advertised project for March 2009.
