This summer BBC Radio 1 returns to the White Isle of Ibiza to bring listeners its legendary dance-fuelled weekend packed full with the hottest DJ sets and the best in live music.

For its 15th year in Ibiza, some of Radio 1′s biggest stars, including Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson and Judge Jules, will be broadcasting their radio shows live from the dazzling home of dance music on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 August.

Starting the weekend in spectacular style, Radio 1 hosts a party at Ibiza Rocks on Friday 6 August with a four-hour live broadcast, where Annie Mac and Pete Tong will be joined by a scorching line-up of special guests.

On Saturday 7 August, Radio 1 is set to take Cream at Privilege by storm with a superb line-up headlined by Underworld. They’ll be joined by Above & Beyond, The Japanese Popstars, Gareth Wyn, Jaguar Skills and the Radio 1 all-star fraternity of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Kissy Sell Out, Kutski, Alex Metric and Jaymo & Andy George.

This year, Radio 1 is covering more events than ever before on the White Isle. On Thursday 5 August, Radio 1 will be rocking up at Come Together at Space – one of the freshest nights on the island – recording blistering sets from Grandmaster Flash, Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe.

As the sun goes down, Cocoon gets up and Radio 1 will be there on Monday 2 August to record simmering sets from Sven Vath and friends. Pre-recorded music from both of those nights will be broadcast over Friday 6 and Saturday 7 August.

Pete Tong says: “Radio 1′s Weekend in Ibiza is the biggest of the summer. We’ll be back with a phenomenal start to the weekend at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel on the Friday and Underworld live from Privilege on Saturday will be a real balearic moment!”

Jason Carter, Editor, BBC Radio 1, Live Events, adds: “This summer, Radio 1′s committal to bringing the very best in live music to our audience is even bigger. As the key destination for dance music fans, Ibiza is a really important part of our programme of events and lots of our listeners go there every year.

“We’ve pulled together a strong line-up of programming from the best and most important nights across the island, featuring a cross section of big hitters, clasic acts and we’ll also be showcasing and supporting new talent.”

More details and the broadcast schedule will be announced shortly.

Pete Tong has revealed further details of Wonderland’s Ibiza events for 2010. The flagship White Island night will hold 15 parties across the summer at Eden, running from 25 June until 1 October.

Guests will include Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Calvin Harris, Annie Mac, Erol Alkan & Boys Noize, and many more. Full weekly line-up details can be found below.

Calvin Harris will hit Wonderland on 23 July, while Erol Alkan and Boys Noize will be playing together for an exclusive 3 hour set on 17 September. Felix Da Housecat will be joined by 2000 and One on 24 September.

The launch party on 25 June will feature an exclusive performance from Roxy Music’s legendary frontman, Bryan Ferry. Joining Pete in the main room will be Ibiza stalwart, Steve Lawler, a name that is synonymous with Ibiza’s rich musical past. Radio 1 newcomers and two of dance music’s brightest ascending stars, Jaymo & Andy George, will host room 2 with their club brand, Moda, a season long residency that will bring their white-hot UK club night to Ibiza for the first time. They will welcome the likes of Burns, Alex Metric, Jakwob, Grum, Mowgli, and beyond.

Tickets for the opening party are on sale now priced at £39.99. These are available from: http://petetong.sandbag.uk.com

Beginning on 25 June, Pete will be broadcasting live from Ibiza through the season on Radio 1 – transmission dates will be available as the summer draws near.

Now in its third year, Wonderland Ibiza follows a 2009 season that saw performances from Lady Gaga, Deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Luciano, Zane Lowe & Mark Ronson, Dubfire, Simian Mobile Disco, Faithless, and beyond.

Following on from the launch party, 2010’s guests will up the ante yet again; with some of the world’s biggest names lined up to rock Wonderland to its core. Joining Pete for the season will be main room residents Rob Marmot and Alex Ellenger (Trust).

Pete Tong commented:
“I’m very proud to present our 3rd season of Wonderland at Eden. It really feels like we are starting to succeed in offering the island something unique and forward thinking in terms of talent and the party experience. We will be trying to push the bar even higher in 2010”.

Jaymo and Andy George said:
“We’re so hyped to be able to take our beloved Moda to Ibiza for the Summer – last year was great, but to move to a weekly slot is a whole new level. The line-ups in the Wonderland room are the best they’ve ever been, the contrast between the two rooms is gonna be perfect! We’re bringing across a load of our best DJ friends too, ensuring all the madness you’d expect from a Moda night… just with shorts & flip-flops! Seems like everyone’s involved with this project is pulling out all the stops for this – I hope Ibiza is ready! “

This Saturday sees this year’s penultimate offering from Pete Tong’s residency Wonderland. Having caused roadblock on the streets of Elephant and Castle over the last year, this episode is set to be another perfect anecdote with some of the leading names in the industry, knocking up a twisted tale of epic house music.

One of the biggest names on the dance music circuit, Chris Lake, will be enchanting a floor full of clubbers in the Box for this Wonderland event. Following on from Mr Pete Tong’s lead, Lake’s atmospheric style of blended house and techno endeavours to drive an epic set of pounding beats right through to a darker turn on the electronic genre, topped off with a few dance favourites. First brought to our attention with his summer hit ‘Changes’ Chris Lake, not only gained chart success but also captured the attention of the clubbing community which aided in his rise to instant popularity. Joining him, another artist that tops the DJ ranks, Style of Eye makes his debut performance at the club. Having only been on the scene for the last 2 years, Linus aka Style of Eye, has gained instant recognition and respect for his quirky and independent sound. Breaking the unwritten rules of house music with his play on merging genres and heavily influenced dubby samples, he continues to cross over using dub, house, jazz and percussion as guidelines. The Box rounds up overall as a futuristic realm of forward thinking dance music.

The Bar, gets wonky with electro offerings from Tim Green, Rob Marmot and We’re Not Cool! South London’s very own, Tim Green has caused a stir within the industry with his new track ‘Kitch In’ dominating sound-systems all over the globe. Spinning out a mix of electro, house and tech-house he leads the way for residents We’re Not Cool! and Rob Marmot, to raise the roof with their twisted synths.

Once again, the Pied Piper of house Pete Tong takes control for a night of top class talent.

Chandeliers float elegantly above an impenetrable fog of dry ice. It puffs away in a cool breath letting the light fall on a sea of upturned faces. “This is Pure Pacha!” Sander Kleinenberg whoops from the DJ box, raising both fists in salute. The girl next to me bursts into a flurry of elbow-popping motion as Sander slams on a remix of We Are Your Friends that thunders across the dance floor like a charge of the Valkyries. Pure Pacha is the quintessential Friday night party in Ibiza – a mélange of music, spectacle and moments that simply wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

Tonight the sense of anticipation is as thick as the smell of cologne because none other than Paul Oakenfold is due on the decks soon. One of the original superstar DJs, Oakie “discovered” Ibiza in 1986 and floated back to London to kick-start the acid house revolution. There is a gradually thickening clot of clubbers around the DJ booth, edging closer in anticipation of his set. Even Sander seems to have caught the fan-club feel, skittering around the booth like a hyperactive kid, clapping, giving a photographer the thumbs-up, pouring champagne. Suddenly a boy dives past me, camera phone aloft to snap Oakie descending upon the DJ box.

He has flown in for the night from his “day job” as Madonna’s official tour DJ. A lot of DJs probably wouldn’t bother taking the time to play for a couple of thousand fans after rocking stadiums night after night, but the huge grin on Paul’s face says it all: he’s home. A flutter of fingers reach upwards and he hangs over the edge of the booth to grab and shake the waiting hands. Sander lets the music drop. The lights lower then remerge on a trio of stunning dancers who slither up onto the podiums, trailing a sea of sequins as the crowd ripples with excitement. Alice in Wonderland never saw anything like this. A wooden hatch opens beneath the stairs and two waiters pop up like surreal rabbits, carrying vast trays of iced glasses and bottles of vodka. No one is paying any attention, though. Every ear is tuned in impatient glee for the first shimmying wave off sound to crash over the room. The bass rumbles as a looped vocal intones: “welcome to Perfecto.” A palpable crackle of energy sparks across the room and suddenly everyone who has come to remember forgets – forgets what year it is, where they are, mostly likely who they’re with. The only thing that matters is the music lifting the club to the stratosphere and Oakie bopping at the controls, controlling the speed and altitude of the flight. Someone reaches up to pass him a CD. He pulls a jokey pose behind the decks. For a few hours, 2009 can be 1989… a pure celebration of sound and motion.

Once again compiled and mixed by Tong, the album represents the sound of his Wonderland night, the weekly Ibiza event that has reinvigorated the White Island’s clubbing landscape.

A music obsessive with an immense hunger for new sounds, Pete’s ability to educate and entertain as a DJ is second to none. Accordingly, ‘Wonderland 2009’ is brimming with the right big names and the kind of underground talent that will soundtrack dancefloors over the coming year.

2 CDs of expertly blended house and techno feature current luminaries such as Deadmau5, Steve Angello, Pryda, Radio Slave, Ladyhawke, Dusty Kid, Sebastien Leger, Gui Boratto, 2020 Soundsystem and many more. Big names such as U2 and Underworld make an appearance via Pete’s own Wonderland remixes.

This season, Wonderland has returned to Ibiza’s Eden following a triumphant first year. In keeping with the island’s spirit, Wonderland pulled together people from varied walks of life, teasing old faces back to San Antonio and throwing open a new world of music for Iberican virgins.

2009 features guests including Groove Armada (4 exclusive performances), Fatboy Slim, Eric Prydz, Deadmau5, Luciano, Timo Mass, Dubfire, M.A.N.D.Y, Dirty South, Gui Boratto and an exclusive performance from Lady Gaga.
Wonderland’s unique artwork has been designed by drum & bass legend turned actor, Goldie. Look out for Wonderland’s arena at Rockness Festival in June and the bimonthly parties at Ministry Of Sound in London over the summer.

For those who do not know about it, tell us about the International Music Summit?
The International Music Summit is an intimate high quality conference set in Ibiza – the spiritual home of dance music – focused on getting the biggest and brightest players in electronic music together for 3 days of debate and networking. A chance to exchange ideas and work on strategies that will make the business stronger and more competitive in the future.

How did all this come about?
The partners all have a passion about our business and a long standing appreciation of Ibiza. We felt that there was an opportunity to create a new type of conference at the start of the Ibiza season. We wanted to create an event that was good for the business and good for Ibiza. We appreciate Miami and Amsterdam but felt Ibiza deserved its own conference as it plays such a major role in what we all do.

You are holding it at the Ibiza Gran this year, why the change?
I think it’s a natural evolution after the success and feedback from last year. The Gran is a major new addition to the island in terms of facilities and gives us many more outlets to stage satellite events around the conference. Ibiza town is a fantastic location.

Why did you feel the need to be involved in a conference like this?
I have been in the business all my working life , I feel this is a great opportunity to put all that experience to positive use

The IMS is teaming up with the Hepatitis C trust – how did that come about?
They saw what we achieved last year and approached us to be involved and support what they were doing – I think it’s a very positive move for both organisations.

Last year was a huge success, with lots of delegates saying they did more business in those 3 days than they had done in years of going to other conferences. How did that make you feel?
Very proud and very happy for Ibiza. It was very rewarding to be able to run such a high quality conference on the island that sometimes suffers for being seen as just the ultimate party place.

Can you tell us anything about the panels this year? How are they relevant to what is going on in our industry at the moment?
We think we put together a very unique and thought provoking selection of panels last year and aim to do the same again for 09 and push the boat out even further! There will panels that address the issues of the day and those that will make people think outside the ‘box’ to use a well worn conference saying!

Can you tell me about the Grand Finale? I hear it’s going to be huge.
We have worked hard to improve our ties with the Ibizan Government during the last year and we are very happy that they have given us access to the fort in the old town , a world heritage site (?) …ben to add full details

I hear the IMS has backing from the Ibiza Government this year which is a massive achievement, tell me more about it…
As I mentioned in the previous question, we wanted them involved last year, they came and participated , they were very impressed with what they saw so this year they have agreed to support us in a more formal way. Hopefully the relationship and can build from here. We want the IMS to become a very important event for the island.

You had 300 delegates last year, and this year has 400 – is this the shape of things to come?
We want the conference to remain intimate that was its strength from the outset but we want the events around the conference to become our interface with a bigger consumer market. Sonar is a great role model.

What was the most inspiring thing that happened at the IMS last year?
Seeing 300 of my colleagues and piers sit through every panel side by side for the whole three days. That was absolutely amazing!

Tom Middleton & Soul Avengerz famously made a track live at last year’s conference, is anyone going to top that this year?
This year Dirty Vegas will be writing the IMS anthem in front of the crowd. Followed by Above & Beyond delivering the remix. It speaks for itself!

Do you think there is a need for another music conference?
I think there is a need for a unique conference in a place that does so much for the scene, the artists the dj’s the producers the writers the promoters. Ibiza inspires us all and rewards us all and I think it deserves this conference and I think the electronic community can take great benefit from it

Will you be djing?
Yes I’m playing before Basement Jaxx who unveil their new live show at the incredible venue awarded to us by the Ibiza Consell, which is a World Heritage site in Dalt Vila. Also playing live are Filthy Dukes, and I will be DJ-ing with Rob da Bank

What are you looking forward to most about this years IMS?
Getting it started on Wednesday morning!

Can you tell me anything about the evening’s showcases?
We decided to invite a handful of labels. So on Wednsday at Grial we have Rekids and Barraca from Spain. And on Thursday, Cr2 join Toolroom and Pacha Recordings. This brings in DJ sets from the likes of Radio Slave, Adam Grant, Mark Knight, Funkagenda, the return of MYNC and Sarah Main. The Danish music industry also roll into a town with Kenneth Beger and a host of others at a special Danish showcase at El Hotel. And each night, Pioneer will host sunset drinks with Sander Kleinenberg, Tom Middleton and Sarah Main already confirmed. BEN

The International Music Summit runs from the 27-29th May 2009 at The Ibiza Gran. Tickets are available at www.internationalmusicsummit.com

25 May 2009 marks the release of ‘The Wired EP’ by Sheffield’s leading purveyor of red-hot underground house D Ramirez, on his own Slave imprint. Both original tracks ‘Wired’ and ‘Road Of Excess’ feature the vocals of LDV, a mysteriously anonymous star, also from the steel city. Remixes come courtesy of house and techno veteran Rob Babicz and D. Ramirez himself.

Already championed by Pete Tong on Radio 1’s Essential Selection, ‘Wired’ is Inspired by the artist’s home town of Sheffield and its industrial past. Heavy on the bleeps synonymous with the town, ‘Wired’ is dark and searing electronic house, featuring pitched-down vocals that recall that other home of machine-inspired funk, Detroit. The production is tight, the energy is unrelenting and the drops are heavy.

Second up is the masterful, Robert Babicz remix of ‘Wired’, a particular favourite of Ramirez that’s been a heavy staple on his recent storming sets. The aggression of the original mix is tamed and replaced with a deeper, housey groove, which teases out the vocals, dowsed in effects to create a trippy remake of epic proportions.

Not your average hedonistic dance music fayre, track 3 ‘Road Of Excess’ was inspired by the ramblings of William Blake no less. A hooky, twisted vocal from the undercover LDV, further provokes the question, “who is this man?” As tweaky and wonky as it is sexy, this is Ramirez at his best.

He still treats us to an extra solo D.Ramirez mix, though. It catches Ramirez in a vibe which sums up his current DJ sets perfectly. The energy is there, but there’s a sinister and deeper undercurrent which permeates the track, providing a real standout club anthem, which more than indicates the future of Slave, musically speaking.

‘The Road Of Excess’ originally featured on the Azuli ‘Headliners’ compilation which D.Ramirez mixed. It was one of the four singles that were written exclusively for the comp. ‘The Road Of Excess’ has been re-produced and re-mixed with a fatter mix-down and added drama in the breakdowns.

The International Music Summit is shaping up as a force to be reckoned with, with just under 150 delegate badges left available, inventive panel discussions with leading industry figures announced, intimate evening showcases and now a spectacular grand finale to open the summer season.

The three-day music summit, which will be held at the Ibiza Gran Hotel from the 27-29th May 2009, will culminate with a dazzling live event at the stunning location in Ibiza’s Dalt Vila. This famous UNESCO World Heritage site will set the spectacular backdrop for the IMS: 09 Grande Finale with a live show featuring the Grammy & Brit award winning Basement Jaxx playing an exclusive live set alongside emerging electronic act The Filthy Dukes. DJs include a rare set from Richie Hawtin outside of Cocoon / Amensia, plus BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong and Rob da Bank.

The IMS have announced that 700 tickets will be available to the public for this landmark event. The IMS:09 will be the first international contemporary music event to take place within the historic Moorish walls of the old town, overlooking the Mediterranean, and annually home to the Ibiza Jazz Festival. The Consell Insular d’Eivissa (Ibiza local government), are co-sponsors of the IMS: 09 event, sending a strong message of support and approval to the electronic gathering.

Basement Jaxx, famous for their flamboyant live stage shows, will perform fully live to kick-start their summer tour. It will act as a first opportunity for anybody to see the new show. The band state:

“We’re delighted to have been asked to close the Grand Finale of the International Music Summit 2009 inside the castle at the top of the old town of Ibiza. To play such a spectacular and intimate venue on the island where we’ve had so many good times was a temptation we couldn’t turn down. What a brilliant way to kick off summer 2009!” – Felix & Simon, Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx will also appear at the IMS summit itself, being interviewed by Pete Tong in front of the electronic industry; about how they’ve made the step from parties in Brixton to Brazilian festivals to become one of the most successful dance acts to emerge from the scene in the last 20 years.

Richie Hawtin, Pete Tong and Rob da Bank will make their only DJ performances of the Ibiza opening party weekend at the IMS Gran Finale. Emerging crossover act Filthy Dukes also play live at sunset.

Pete Tong states: “This is my only performance of the Ibiza opening weekend and after three days of intense debate; it will be a night to celebrate. To see the Jaxx in the most historic location on the island will be a moment to remember. Sunset in Dalt Vila will never be the same.”

IMS summit content is shaping up nicely too; with additional speakers being added to the already impressive line-up. With no doubling up of panels to create focus, they are gaining a well-deserved reputation for helping to shape the future of the electronic music scene. Latest speaker additions include Mark Selby, the Vice President of Nokia Multimedia worldwide, who has history with Ibiza after creating the first ever mobile phone initiative in Ibiza in 1999 with IMS partners Ben Turner and Pete Tong. In addition, Ted Cohen from TAG Strategic will feature in a presidential style debate. Cohen was formerly Vice President of Digital Development at EMI. Martin Morales from Disney Music Group joins the synch session, whilst the legendary audio genius behind Funktion 1, Tony Andrews, will also speak about the increasing importance of educating about good sound to the IPod generation. Other names of note include artist Mark Knight, plus representatives from The Big Chill, AEG Europe, Ingenious Media and BBC Radio 1. The full list of new additions is:

* Amy Thomson, Dex-Ray, UK
* Callum Negus-Fancey, Let¹s Go Crazy, UK
* Caroline Prothero, Prohibition DJ, UK
* Chris Greenwood, Big Chill, UK
* Cliff Fluet, Lewis Silkin, UK

Tom Middleton has now been confirmed as the official IMS blogger in conjunction with Beatport. He will write live on the Beatportal website as the debates rage with his personal views and insight.

IMS has also announced that on the first and second nights of the summit (Wednesday & Thursday), labels Rekids, Toolroom, Pacha Recordings and CR2 will host intimate showcase events at the Grial venue, located opposite the main Ibiza Gran Hotel. Three labels will showcase at each party.

Help shape the future of electronic music and get to the International Music Summit 2009.

Featuring P Diddy and Michael Jackson collaborator Inaya Day, ‘Natural High’ has already garnered a raft of support from Radio 1 and Kiss, bagging itself a #1 UK club chart smash in the process.

The Out Of Office ‘Full Vocal Remix’ is stripped down, oozing Inaya’s soulful vocals over skidding synths before the infectious piano riff erupts. Mickey Slim’s re-rub bubbles over low-slung broken beats, before Dino Lenny’s ‘Classic Rave Remix’ snowballs into an infectious monster of dazzling piano riffs. Lee Haslam’s mix is a dense sound clash of echoing vocals, relentless bass and twitchy bleeps, whilst Ant Brookes’ remix fizzes around hypnotic bass and laser-gun klaxons. Mickey Slim’s second offering closes the package, with scratchy analogue feedback spearing gloopy acid grooves.

Michael’s Out of Office alter ego has already been championed by Radio 1’s Pete Tong as ‘set to be major,’ naming ‘Hands Up’ an ‘Essential New Tune.’ He’s received consistent backing from Roger Sanchez’s internationally syndicated ‘Release Yourself’ radio show and picked up support from #1 house DJ David Guetta. 2008 also saw him rock Gatecrasher Summer Soundsytem and DJ alongside Soulwax, Jonathan Ulysses and Bodyrox.

It was whilst being classically trained at Pimlico’s Trinity College of Music that Michael discovered house music and began some rather reckless extra-curricular activities, mainly breaking into the school music rooms at lunch, where, like coveted treasure, lay an ancient Apple Mac and Korg M1 upon which Michael would blast out warped electronic odysseys.

Initially breaking into the scene as Warrior and landing himself a top 20 UK and #1 club chart smash with the eponymous track, Michael’s sophomore release, ‘Voodoo,’ enjoyed similar success and led to a string of collaborations, including 2003’s hook-up with Judge Jules and vocalist sister Marcella Woods on ‘Beautiful.’

Early ’09 will also see Out of Office up the ante; first, a collaboration with The Original on ‘90s anthem ‘I Luv U Baby,’ and then ‘Insatiable’ featuring sister Marcella.

“It’s time to concentrate on myself now,” he says. “With Diffused, I want to explore all genres, mixing whatever sounds I uncover and being totally fearless. There’s no other way.”
