Sheffield’s iconic clubbing institution is set to make a historic return to the city this year. Three years since world-celebrated Sheffield nightclub Gatecrasher burned to the ground, owners have revealed firm plans to develop a new flagship venue in the city which they hope to open on their 17th Birthday this September.

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield City Council to create the ultimate 30,000 square foot , 2000 capacity hyper-club in the heart of the city, just a few yards from the original Arundel Street site. Subject to planning permission, Gatecrasher intends to invest £5 million developing the basement of the infamous cheese grater car park (Q-Park) on Charles Street creating over 200 city jobs. The site has been chosen because it means that Gatecrasher can open the club in 2010, originally bosses intended to open on the old Arundel Street site but that would mean an extensive and time consuming rebuild.

Gatecrasher is urging the city to get behind them and ‘Vote Yes’ for the new club and have created an online petition for messages of support for the new venue which they intend to submit to the council to back-up their planning proposals.

Gatecrasher bosses hope to build a state-of the art venue like no other in the UK and intends to enlist the skills of celebrated international designer Callin Fortis from New York based Big Time design. Fortis is responsible for the award winning designs of the world’s most famous clubs including Crobar New York, Crobar Chicago, and the Cameo Theater in Miami. Fortis also designed Gatecrasher’s Birmingham club voted top UK club by dance music bible Mixmag. His clubs are revered the world over with fans including Paris Hilton, Harrison Ford, Lenny Kravitz, Cameron Diaz, George Clooney and Tommy Hilfiger. A Phase 1 drawing has been submitted details the layout of the venue which will include 4 different club rooms and a main auditorium designed for both DJs and live music. Fortis and his team at Big Team Design are currently progressing the finer details.

The loss of Gatecrasher in Sheffield sent shock-waves throughout clubland, no-one was hurt but dance music fans worldwide mourned the loss of a clubbing institution. Following the fire the club received over 5000 emails and letters of support. Club bosses vowed to return to their spiritual home as soon as possible and have spent the last three years trying to find a suitable location.

An application for planning permission has been lodged with council and Gatecrasher is urging the city to get behind their plans.

Simon Raine, MD of Gatecrasher, commented;
“Gatecrasher hopes to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. We were devastated at the loss of the Sheffield club in 2007 and have been searching tirelessly for a location so we can return to our spiritual Sheffield home. What’s been heartening is all the support we’ve had from the city, we get emails daily asking us when we are returning to Sheffield and now it is finally a reality, although there is still a long way to go”

Since Gatecrasher launched in Sheffield in the mid-90s, it has played a significant role in the development of the city and has been previously been praised by council officials for its impact on the economy and tourism. The clubs contribution to Sheffield’s thriving nightlife and entertainment scene firmly placed the city on the International map creating major interest and inward investment. The impact the club has had on the city is staggering with over 8 million people attending Gatecrasher in Sheffield in over 10 years. A survey carried out in 2001 also found Gatecrasher to be the number one reason that students decided to study in Sheffield.

During Gatecrasher’s reign in the city, the club played host to the most spectacular club nights which are now immortalised in clubbing history. The club kick started a dance revolution and helped forge the careers of DJs including Judge Jules, Tiesto, Mauro Picotto and Armin Van Buuren.

From humble beginnings to a world-conquering global club brand, Gatecrasher has continued to push boundaries and dominate dance music. It’s reputation as a flamboyant, individual and hedonistic brand continues to grow and the Gatecrasher name remains emblazoned in the heart and soul of clubbers throughout the world. The Gatecrasher lion has always sat proudly at the forefront of clubland, responsible for many of Sheffield’s never-to- be- forgotten events.

With the launch of the new club hopes to define a new decade of clubbing. Simon Raine added;
“The new site will exceed all expectations bolder, bigger and a lot more edgier than before. We want to build the best nightclub in the world that has always been our aim!.”

Gatecrasher is looking to engage the city of Sheffield in the quest to launch its new club and is looking for suggestions and support from city dwellers. They also intend to work closely with residents, local police and Sheffield City Council, Simon added;
“Having worked as part of the community in Sheffield for over a decade, we are more than aware we need to work in close partnership with the residents, the local authority and police to address any potential issues before they arise. We are currently in close consultation with the relevant authorities to ensure that our policies around noise, anti-social behaviour and dispersal satisfy each party.”

GATECRASHER IS URGING THE CITY TO ‘VOTE’ YES FOR THEIR PLANS TO RETURN TO THE CITY. PEOPLE CAN REGISTER THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE PROPOSED VENUE BY LOGGING ONTO: WWW.GATECRASHER.COM/SHEFFIELD

In these challenging, yet exciting times, media visionaries have developed dynamic ways of delivering music away from the traditional methods; Radiohead’s recent digital download scheme of ‘pay what you want’ for their ‘In Rainbows’ album is probably the best and most famous example to date. Now James and Renaissance continue this trend as they release the ‘Masters Series’ with a dynamic, unique approach that’s primed to change the face of current compilations…

So what is it?
James is embarking on a headlining world tour from March 2010 to coincide with the album, at the club shows the compilation will be given away for free to a majority, if not all, the music-lovers who have bought their regularly priced ticket to the event.

The album will be presented in a shrink-wrapped, full-colour wallet on a flexi-DVD that’s both eco-friendly (50% less carbon emissions) and lightweight (again, 50% less than standard CD/DVDs). Alongside the 2 mixes that comprise the compilation, the package will also feature two exclusive videos: a tour diary and making of the Masters Series, alongside custom screensavers, desktop wallpapers, icons and more!

The real magic of this concept is that the party-goers won’t have to pay more than a regularly priced club ticket for their entry where they will collect the free album. Also, all artists that feature on the album will receive their royalties. This is a point James and Renaissance felt passionately about so ensured it remained part of the concept.

James comments “A bit like my previous Masters Series this mix is another snapshot into life through my ears. Rather than make 2 distinct journeys (one home listening and one club) I tried to carry the theme of ‘life’ over the span of both mixes, this time blurring them together, making for a single soundscape. The fact we’re going to be distributing this mix in a unique way alongside traditional methods also makes this project all the more exciting for me to put together.”

D.Ramirez’s muscular, electronic take on house music is back with a vengeance with new single “Satur8” proving that the next D.Ramirez release is always worth the wait.

With an autumn schedule that sees remixes of Skunk Anansi, a collaboration with Underworld and an enviable gig-list it’s with his own Slave Recordings that the true gold can be found.

“Satur8” is big room, riffy and of course dripping with the sort of production trickery that defines the D.Ramirez sound, but is simple in its approach and massively effective for it. The stripped back drum track provides groove while it’s the massive, old school key progression riff and ethereal vocal washes that provide the frankly massive hooks which have been igniting floors throughout the summer.

Jamie Stevens of Infusion, a favourite of Ramirez, has been drafted in on the remix and typically for the studio workaholic, has delivered three outstanding re-rubs. Fresh from tackling remix duties of Bookashade on Get Physical, he’s in superb form and mixes are hard to choose between in terms of quality. The tech dub is electronic-dub inflected house which literally fills the room with heavy, bass driven sound before a massively detuned synth warbles one of the most disctinctive lead lines you’re likely to hear.

The “Super8” remix continues the vibe, but stretches things into an altogether more unhurried, late night direction. The dubby skank here is complimented with a striking bass drop which breaks the track up brilliantly for those who like to throw the ‘floor a bit of a curve.

Stevens’ “Super Dub” combines the best of both mixes, and is the sort of cut that begs to be played peak time but retains depth and warmth. Faced with choosing which of Stevens’ mixes has been skipping between all three to create some rather epic live edits, which should provide other jocks with a lead on what to do with such an excellent package.

This is vintage D.Ramirez, and the beginning of a few months of D.Ramirez gold…

Celebrating 3 years of highly successful global parties, Toolroom Knights return to their London home; Ministry of Sound on Saturday, 21st November with a roll call of the label’s leading artists, hyped and ready for 7 hours of intoxicating sounds, an exclusive back-to-back main room DJ marathon, and a rare chance for you to catch the collective Knights together on one line-up to celebrate and smash-it in true Toolroom style.

Offering something a little different for the occasion, The Box sees Mark Knight & Martijn Ten Velden, Dave Spoon & D. Ramirez team up for an all singing, all dancing 5 hour back-2back show involving 4 CDJ’s, 3 mixers, 2 laptops, a whole world of FX and no doubt the odd house classic been thrown down. Funkagenda, launching his Toolroom Knights compilation, will close the room flying-solo with an array of Birthday bangers and exclusive personal edits. As friends, producers and DJ’s these are 5 of the most passionate talents working in the industry today, who between them have dominated the dance charts with a succession of big releases and tonight as the leading Toolroom Knights share a common goal…to tear a new dance floor in the main room for the Birthday.

Over in the Bar it’s all about a special DJ/live set from Grammy Award winning Dirty Vegas, fusing vocal elements of a live performance with the energy and beats of a DJ set. 2009 has been a hectic year for the DV trio, who’ve been back in the studio, had 3 major releases on Toolroom; Pressure, Changes and this summer’s IMS anthem Tonight, remixed big hitters Dizzie Rascal, Calvin Harris, Ladytron and announced plans for an artist album due early 2010. All eyes will be on the boys as they turn up their talents for this exciting Birthday appearance. In support, the Bar will be rocking to the sound of Toolroom’s future stars; Pete Griffiths, George Andrews, Mark Storie, Gina Star and the label’s latest ‘Leader of the New School’ Paul Thomas, looking to celebrate the release of his ‘LONS’ album. London party supremos Get Diverted host the Loft and Gifted bring the underground sounds to the Baby Box.

All in all, an almighty party to celebrate 3 years of Toolroom Knights and another guaranteed road-block.

And there’s MORE – Toolroom want to give a little something back as a thank-you for your continued support of their parties over the last 3 years, so all tickets purchased on the door will receive the latest Toolroom Knights CD mixed by Funkagenda FREE, and for advanced ticket holders the CD will be available on the night for £5. With fresh emphasis on their Dance legacy past, present and future, Club Anthems encapsulates another sound and resonance of the infamous lion’s roar from the early 90s through to present day from Sneaker Pimps and Gat Décor to Prodigy and Faithless to Guru Josh and Deadmau5 …….

This summer, Gatecrasher released Gatecrasher’s Trance Anthems 1993-2009 a trance anthology celebrating 16 years of dance floor domination…… The result? A euphoric opus of the laser-imprinted anthems that propelled Gatecrasher’s trance brand Crasher to supremacy. The album topped the compilation charts and achieved instantaneous Gold-selling status (currently selling over 115,000 copies).

With Gatecrasher still emblazoned in club-goers hearts and souls they’ve decided to do it again with the release of Gatecrasher’s Club Anthems 1993-2009. This time the music will be more reflective of the sounds that have thrust Gatecrasher’s impressive nightclub and events portfolio to dance-floor dominance. Dance fans will be able to drench their senses in the most uncompromising sounds around, classics that have set dance floors ablaze, classics that Gatecrasher has helped champion and chart. The album is a true celebration of two decades of electronic music past, present and future.

Gatecrasher’s Club Anthems 1993-2009 is an inspiring sonic soundscape featuring tracks that have touched the heart of the masses, an adrenalin-fuelled epic signalling the mighty Gatecrasher lion’s focus on the smash hit dance genre. Set across 3 CDs, the album takes the energy, passion and irresistible momentum of the Gatecrasher brand and throws it headlong into the iconic brands biggest dance-floor moments…

The Gatecrasher story is far from over as the Lion continues to go from strength to strength. Gatecrasher’s Club Anthems 1993-2009 reflects the sounds that have rocked the dance floor of Gatecrasher’s burgeoning club empire throughout the years.

As a special celebration Gatecrasher welcomes one of the most famous DJs in the world, Moby to headline the official album launch party at their flag-ship club in Birmingham on Sat 14th November.

Gatecrasher’s Club Anthems 1993-2009 provides the perfect opportunity to look back to the club’s heritage, as the brand further evolves and broadens its musical spectrum. A celebration of the past, present and future. These moments will last forever……

Gatecrasher

The past two years have been phenomenal for Gatecrasher. 2008 witnessed with the opening of its £5million flagship venue in Birmingham. Since the club opened over a million clubbers have flocked to the venue with DJs including Eric Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Fedde Le Grand and Laid Back Luke rating the club amongst the top venues in the world. Gatecrasher’s Watford club Area had a decadent makeover in 2009 to critical acclaim. This October also saw the opening of Ultra Gatecrasher in Nottingham which has been restructured taking inspiration from the darker more underground live music scene. Gatecrasher also continues its dominance in the north with its Leeds club Gatecrasher 7 going from strength to strength and a new Sheffield club to be launched soon.

Our man from up t’ road D. Ramirez (AKA Dean Marriot), is giving North American clubbers a real treat this summer as he is jumping the pond for a rare tour of the U.S. and Canada the entire month of August. He’ll be calling Los Angeles home as he works on adding to his never ending flow of new original productions. First up: Dean’s brand new single “Satur8” featuring two remixes from Infusion’s Jamie Stevens. We are offering a sneak preview edit of original mix by clicking here. In addition to the release of “Satur8,” this summer with be packed with five new singles featuring Underworld, Matt Tolfrey, Mark Knight & Robert Owens and a remix of Skunk Anansie’s “Twisted” and Max Linen’s “The Soulshaker”

D. Ramirez is an artist who is consider to be the “producer’s producer.” That’s because a wide cross section of the world’s finest dance music artists are also major D. Ramirez fans and continue to support his music. From huge live acts like Underworld and Hybrid to top-draw DJs like Carl Cox, Pete Tong and Toolroom’s Mark Knight, D. Ramirez continues to impress them with his innovative productions and technical wizardry. In fact, D. Ramirez is such an astute producer that he was recently made the subject of a three-part in-studio profile with Future Music Magazine. Here, Dean takes fans into his world and teaches them about setting up and choosing sounds, adding extra drums and arrangements. You can view the entire series via www.dramirez.co.uk/site/video_2.php

D. Ramirez has traveled the world as if he was on a covert dance operation. He’s fired off rockets under a bevy of aliases including The Lisa Marie Experience, Cordial, Finger Fest, Rambo, and of course, D. Ramirez. The names are not fads but reflect the artist’s ever-changing musical palette; and it can change on a dime. Although he was credited as the artist who first coined the “electrohouse” sound, Ramirez has seen the genre reach a saturation point. After some serious soul searching and shift to a new studio, Dean emerges with a tough techno and house sound inspired by the production gear he so fondly admires. If you consider his meticulous DJ mixes where loops, tricks and FX are intricately laced with exceptional accuracy or his studio methods where he’s known to tinker with noises for days on end, it’s just a case of simple, logical progression.

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

August 6 – Minneapolis – Karma
August 7 – New York City – Pachita
August 8 – Denver – Vinyl

“Are you ready?” is a common question you’ll be asked by 24 year old Sheffield wunderkind Toddla T, and it’s a good question to ask yourself before listening to his FABRICLIVE 47 mix. In amongst his wide vocabulary of homegrown slang and off-the-wall catchphrases, Toddla T (known to his mum as Tom Bell) is a bright embodiment of boundless enthusiasm, unmatched charisma and a musical personality unlikely to be found anywhere else on the planet. His otherworldly taste in beats is often hard to keep up with as he shuffles effortlessly through genres and styles at a reckless pace, guided by an energy that, if bottled, could power the very same soundsystems that rattle with his electro dancehall and bashment-flavoured sets around the globe. It’s difficult to picture the lanky, wild-haired, motor-mouthed lad even getting exposed to said soundclash-geared sounds, and that very well could be the key to his success and explosive prominence. From the release of his much vaunted ‘Ghettoblaster’ mixtape to the quick-fire releases of his debut artist album ‘Skanky Skanky’ and now this official debut mix album, it has been a rollercoaster two years.

First picking up a set of turntables aged 12 (hence the Toddla moniker) after a cousin got him hooked on hip hop, it all began four years later when he discovered the skankier sounds of Sheffield: dancehall, ragga, grime and techno. “I grew up in an area that was mixed; I went to a mixed school and was really encouraged to get stuck into all kinds of cultures and people. It’s the only way I’ve known. If it was any different, it would be a bit weird. I was encouraged to get stuck into everything and it paid off now with the music. Seeing music as being one thing rather than little pockets of things, it’s all just one thing to me really.” – Toddla T

This inclusive attitude, which epitomizes British music in 2009, has driven his DJing since day one, and it’s the fuel for his creative fire. And it’s contagious. In fact, it’s the reason why, aged 18, he was picked up as a studio engineer at the Kenwood Studios in Sheffield where Dizzee Rascal had made ‘Boy In Da Corner’, working with the likes of Cash Money and Roots Manuva, with no previous experience to speak of. “The only reason I got into the engineering side was because it was the only way; I didn’t know anyone who made music so the only way to do it was learn myself. I spent a few years doing that and it was amazing, I met some wicked people and I learnt how to be in studio environments with everyone from local bands to pop stars.”

Toddla’s first taste of being an artist in his own right came with his original production setup, Small Arms Fiya; a collaboration with fellow producer Scott Moncrieff which yielded several releases and remixes. But it was the combination of releasing his ‘Ghettoblaster’ mixtape and working solo on production that firmly put him on the map. “I wanted to put the mixtape out because I wanted to represent what I was about – not just a couple of rhythm tracks. And then it just went berserk, it got out of hand really! Then I got signed to an album off the back of it, which was just incredible.”

This signing, to 1965 Records – a Sony subsidiary – led to the release of his debut album, ‘Skanky Skanky’, in May of this year. In the couple of years leading to the album, he had carved a name for himself as a producer and remixer of massive repute. From his show stealing production on Roots Manuva’s ‘Buff Nuff’ and ‘Do Nah Bodda Mi’ to the unbridled personality injections in his remixes of the likes of Hot Chip, Tricky and Esser – he repeatedly proved his ability to sculpt tracks that buzz with the crackling energy of dancehall and gut-wrenching low-end.

As for what the young artist is currently working on production-wise, the list is virtually endless. But it’s best put in his own words (which may require a translator) – for, as seen on his cult-worshipped Toddla TV youtube series, there’s no such thing as a conversation with Toddla T; it’s all a whirlwind of character, liveliness and whim.”I’ve been doing some production, I did 2 tracks for Bashy’s album, ‘Catch Me If You Can,’ one of which was lead single – ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.’ I’ve done a track for Tinchy Stryder’s album, which he absolutely murked. Been in with Roisin Murphy working on her record. I’m goin’ to Jamaica in a couple of months for a coupla days in the studio…READY. Also about to go in with Trojan Soundsystem. Started my monthly Radio 1 show, every third Friday of the month, 2-4am….Steel City sonix nation wiiide!!!”

In comes the Steel City via FABRICLIVE 47, a living, breathing summation of all that is exciting about club music today, and for years to come. Veering from genre to genre, never missing a beat, Toddla – aided by the vocals of long term sparring partner MC Serocee – scorches through a searing seventy minute mix that lurches from the familiar electro dancehall of Cavemen’s remix of Duffy and Toddla’s own ‘Fill Up Mi Portion;’ to the Bristol jump-up drum & wobble of the Clipz/Toddla collabo; to the funky of Geeneus and Lil Silva; to dubstep from Untold and Caspa, with plenty of bends and tangents in between. Laced with VIPs, edits, medleys and exclusives throughout, this mix is the sound of one of the world’s most boxfresh artists, standing absolutely on top of the game. “I really wanted to represent an average DJ set in fabric from Toddla T & Serocee, Sheffield sonic stylee – as if a sweaty Sheffield basement was deported to Farringdon for the night! I’ve got exclusives and unreleased stuff from Roots Manuva, Skream, Drums Of Death, Untold, Shake Alleti, Toddla T (obviously), Martelo, Oris Jay, Oneman & Mr Versatile, as well as a few cheeky blends that have never been done before! So hopefully a lot of stuff will be brand new to people’s ears. This is fierce club kinda fodder!” – Toddla T

Helders, McClure and Toddla join forces to showcase the Music City

Sheffield’s leading musicians have joined forces to create a celebration of the city’s vibrant musical scene and outstanding musical heritage. Working in partnership with the city’s independent venues and promoters, the inaugural Tramlines event sets out to capture the sound of the city.

Tramlines 09, which takes place from July 24th to July 26th, will feature line ups curated by the city’s artists. The multi venue festival will be featured in up to 30 venues with a 4,000 capacity main stage on Devonshire Green.

As well as the musical muscle provided by the three curators, special guests adding their weight to proceedings include the legendary Ibiza Rocks, award winning music website Drowned In Sound and city festival veterans Adventures In the Beetroot Field, (the people behind Stag and Dagger and the Camden Crawl).

The festival, which has enjoyed enthusiastic support from Sheffield City Council will form part of a week long celebration of Sheffield’s music, entitled Sheffield Music City. Hallam FM will be making an appearance, programming the main stage on the Saturday with Little Boots, Pixie Lott and The Panics amongst those already confirmed.

Head of programming and the man responsible for mobilising Sheffield’s musical mafia into action, James O’Hara explains:

Our aim with Tramlines was to create a festival atmosphere across the city all weekend. Ultimately we would like this to grow into a kind of urban Glastonbury.

Jon, Matt and Toddla have given us amazing support – leaning on their friends in the music industry has allowed us to put on an event that is entirely free.

Whilst the curators are still keeping the line ups close to their chests the event is guaranteed plenty of attention with all three artists releasing albums this Summer.
As well as the Tramlines event, a host of other activity will be going on around the city as part of the Sheffield Music City celebration. Musical workshops, a kids area and a community stage celebrating different aspects of the city’s musical wealth are already programmed in.

It should be an amazing weekend, as well as the thirty or so venues taking part in Tramlines, we are encouraging the whole city to get involved, so you should expect to hear music on every street corner.

Get on board!

Fellow ‘ziners Drowned In Sound, have an interview with with Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders available for your viewing pleasure; here

Activision Publishing, Inc. is set to once again revolutionize how consumers interact with music by releasing three new titles this fall – DJ Hero(TM), Guitar Hero(R) 5 and Band Hero(TM) – that will redefine the company’s popular music gaming platform. The slate will transform the way consumers enjoy and engage with music by offering the largest variety of music genres, innovative technologies and new social entertainment experiences for existing fans and millions of new consumers who previously have not joined Guitar Hero’s global community of fans.

The company’s groundbreaking DJ Hero expands Guitar Hero’s signature social gaming to all-new consumers with the addition of diverse music genres including hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance. Introducing an all-new innovative turntable controller, DJ Hero transforms players into DJs who rule the club scene by creating original mixes of popular songs and music from the world’s most exciting artists and DJs.

Letting fans continue to fulfill their rock fantasies, Guitar Hero 5 features the hottest rock and roll artists today as well as classic rock bands and gives players an unprecedented level of control over the way they play the game with the ability to drop in and out of songs and change band members, instruments and difficulty levels on the fly.

The franchises’ first E10+ rated console game, Band Hero delivers an exciting music collection featuring top-40 hits designed to expand the appeal to a broad family audience who can play together on the guitar, drums, bass and microphone and experience a new genre of music. The game builds upon Guitar Hero’s easy-to-play, difficult-to-master signature gameplay and allows novice players and expert fans to join together on their favorite songs.

“Guitar Hero has made music social again and has become one of the most popular ways to experience music,” said Dan Rosensweig, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Guitar Hero franchise. “Today’s fans enjoy a variety of music and are looking for more ways to engage with their favorite songs, artists and fellow fans. These games will let them listen, participate and socialize with music in ways they have never been able to before.”
